The Wide Open Blue
Before going back to the grindstone from taking my daughter to school, I took these photos at the lakeside. It was sleeting. Edited to bring out the different shades of blue better.

The grey building is a malthouse owned and operated by Viking Malt. Large quantities are produced for export.

The tip of the cape in the district of Niemi. Niemi, by the way, means _cape_. In fact, the name of the city, Lahti, means _bay_. Laconic and unimaginative names like that are typical of this region. According to a stereotype, the people of the historical region of Tavastia tend to be laconic and taciturn.

All of the lake is frozen over at the moment. My guess is it will be completely free of ice maybe four weeks from now depending on weather conditions, of course.

You mean the name of the region? Tavastia is the Swedish and also English name of it. I think think the name is that of the noble family Tavast. The Finnish language name is HΓ€me. It may be related to the Baltic-Slavic root <i>zeme</i> meaning land. But I'm not sure about any of this.
