Postcards are forever - the Vintage Collection #4

During Medieval and Renaissance periods, a *Doge* was a lord and chief of State in the so-called *Italian Crowned Republics.*

The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale, in Italian), is one of the main landmarks of Venice, Italy. Built in Venetian Gothic Style, it has the wing overlooking the lagoon decorated with 14th-century sculptures by Filippo Calendario, Matteo Raverti and Antonio Bregno (and other Lombard artists).

At least four serious fires destroyed the Palace between the 10th and the 16th century. During all reconstruction works, it was decided to respect the Gothic style.

It became a museum in 1923 when the Italian State gave the management of the building to the Venetian municipality. Nowadays, the main entrance is in via Porta del Frumento, on the waterfront side.

In 1861, John P. Charlton, an American printer, produced the first postcard, later copyrighted with Hymen Lipman (who is also credited with the copyright of the first pencil with an eraser, in 1858).

After more than 150 years, all kinds of postcards were produced all around the world.
Nowadays they seem a thing from the past and probably they are a vintage view on what the world once was. Those willing to actually pay attention can find a full universe in a single postcard.
