The company Nordyke & Marmon Co, which produced one of the most notable cars of pre-war time, was founded in 1851. The company managed to try itself in many technical areas, until in 1902 did not present to the public a full-fledged car.


The founder and owner of Nordyke & Marmon Co Howard Marmon created his first offspring quite powerful and modern for those years: the machine was equipped with a V4 engine with forced lubrication. Already the first-born of the company showed the main trend of the company-to make cars large, luxurious, with a sufficient supply of power.


Subsequently, Nordyke & Marmon Co, whose automotive division was reduced to the name of Marmon, followed this direction — the company produced cars all the more luxurious, their reputation became higher. The 20s of the last century were the Golden years of Howard Marmon's company: the Marmon machines enjoyed incredible success among wealthy customers, fighting for the main audience with a great Cadillac. Designing and producing cars with 8-and 12-cylinder engines, Marmon still lagged behind the company Cadillac, which spoiled its customers with machines with an engine of 16 cylinders. Technical details were of little interest to buyers of cars in the US in the first third of the XX century, and the number of cylinders indicated mainly on the prestige of the car.

The management of the company is very interested to catch up and overtake its closest competitor, Cadillac, and gave the command for the development of the engine with 16 cylinders. Howard Marmon personally took part in the work on the engine. At first, it was planned to simply combine two 8-cylinder engines, but this idea did not work, since the weight of the planned power unit was frighteningly large. Having lost precious time, the designers began to work with a clean slate. Creating an engine from scratch, with the extra weight decided to fight with the help of aluminium, making a winged metal cylinder block, the head of the engine.

Despite the huge working volume of 8 liters, the latest engine Marmon was so easy that it had almost the highest specific power among American cars of that time. This engine decided to equip the most luxurious model in the line of companies — Marmon v16, which was available with sedan and convertible. The presentation of the car was held in the early autumn of 1929, a month and a half before the "black Tuesday" — October 24.

The audience met the novelty happily, and all promised a successful future of the model, but the stock market crash has changed the situation. During the great depression cars, of course, almost no sale, and such luxury as Marmon v16, and even more so.

The company managed to sell about 390 cars with two variants of bodies. In 1933, the company's management realized that to continue to produce limousines of this class is completely unprofitable, and closed all the "passenger" division Marmon, focusing on the production of trucks and household appliances. This unit was later sold to Thomas Tucker, a legendary figure in the history of the automotive industry, who was already preparing the base for the production of his original Tucker machines.

Of the 390 Marmon v16 cars produced, about 80 are still on the move and are maintained in excellent condition. The cost of such cars on auction starts from only $ 100,000. Although, it is worth noting that the model v16 is not so often offered for sale — few people want to part with the automotive legend of the United States early 30s.</center>
