As Mike Burgess, Australia’s spy chief, said, "If Huawei and ZTE are allowed to build Australia's 5G network, then the country's power grid and water supply will not be fully protected." The New Zealand Government believes that letting Huawei participate in the construction of a 5G network is not conducive to national security.

At present, Huawei's technology is used at the edge of New Zealand's 4G network. Local operator Spark and 2 Degrees use Huawei's mobile base stations. But if Huawei participates in building a 5G network, it could mean that Huawei will be at the heart of the New Zealand network. This is exactly what the New Zealand Government is worried about.

In the face of this remark, Andrew Bowater, CEO of Huawei New Zealand, said on November 3 that Huawei will not participate in the local 5G core network upgrade business bidding. Andrew Bowater pointed out that he was aware of the Government's attitude and claimed that “it is useless to negotiate with them”, so Huawei will directly drop out of the competition. In addition, Andrew Bowater strongly denied that Huawei poses any security threats to New Zealand and believes that the New Zealand Government's decision is not wise, pointing out that consumers will ultimately bear the price.

Some people believe that Huawei's ban on participation in the construction of a 5G network in multiple countries is due to local protectionism and it is considered unfair. In the framework of a market economy, fair market competition should be implemented. Huawei currently has advanced communication technology, but it cannot find extensive cooperation because of political raisons.
