I'm sure if you have read the title you're probably wondering what crypto exchange was hacked and lost 20 billion dollars worth of bitcoin,  but this time the 20 billion dollars does not belong to users on any single exchange but from an amalgamation of users who for all intents and purposes locked bitcoins away and thrown away the key. yes that's right over the past 10 years bitcoin users have lost over 20 billion dollars worth of cryptocurrency to user error and other issues that have  become legendary in the cryptocurrency world.  some people going so far as to reach out to hypnosis practitioners to recover the lost keys that  possibly hold a fortune.

The estimate of 20 billion dollars comes from a new york-based blockchain company called chain analysis. This farm is also been noted for saying that around 80% of bitcoin transactions can be traced to a single counterparty.  Unfortunately they are only in the business of analysing blockchains and finding interesting trends, they cannot help you recover your lost bitcoins. That task they say is the job of the FBI or other specialised entities depending on how your cryptocurrency was lost.

The best thing to start with if you have lost your cryptocurrency keys or other means of access is to look into hiring a tech savvy guru, who may possibly be able to recover it for you.  some password experts may use Brute force  or other tools to hash out the combination of characters they may make up a wallet password.  This method may take more than a few lifetimes if you don't have any preliminary data to base the permutations on. Some password recovery services will attempt to help you remember you are keys by asking you questions and trying to ascertain clues as to what that password may be. The success rate this type recovery method is apparently about 30%, but I hear that's better than the success rate of hypnosis and some of the more french methods a password recovery.

I hope if you're reading this it has scared you into going out and buying a couple of flash drives that you can save your private keys too.  Make sure to distribute the private keys between various safe locations where they won't be thrown away or damaged. But I will also take some time to familiarise myself with the keys every once in a while so that if they are lost hypnosis may actually work.  At the end of the day the best way to secure your private keys is to save them to as many safe places as possible, so that you have protection from any potential disaster or mistakes that may occur which could cause the loss of your funds.
