# The Good News
Citizens of the world are no longer locked into citizenship of the country they are born. Bitnation allows individuals to create or join their own decentralized nations.

[Bitnation](https://tse.bitnation.co/) is a very high level, complex project that is attempting to replace government for the people with government by the people. The main idea of Bitnation is that it allows a network of voluntary digital nations to be created by anybody at any time.

Bitnation provides the framework for building the governance and allows citizens of physical countries to join and unjoin their voluntary nations at any time.

The benefit of these nations is that rules can be applied to contracts or p2p transactions that cross physical borders and normally become subject to multiple sets of regulations that not only make business confusing but expensive, time-consuming and complicated.

Bitnation also allows contracts like marriages (and other contracts) to be created between individuals that may not be allowed in certain countries. It allows citizens to be free and to dictate which rules govern them.
## HOW DOES IT WORK?
Bitnation is composed of Pangea which is the core decentralized borderless volunteer nation (DBVN) and user-created nations that are based on the Pangea core.
The points of a DBVN is to represent groups of people that share interests and allow them to conduct financial, social, and personal business together in ways that would normally be restricted by borders, laws, and other geopolitical boundaries.
A key component of a DBVN is the multitude of p2p contracts that can be implemented within. Examples of these contracts include business contracts, private contracts, and essential records.
In addition to these core contracts, a marketplace that offers freelance arbitrators, well-written laws, and custom smart contracts will be available on Pangea.
## CONTRACTS + BITNATION = ?
You might be thinking that someone from Australia can already use a smart contract with someone in Kenya, and technically you'd be correct. The problem is when it comes to arbitration. The smart contract is code and isn't capable of understanding right from wrong when it comes to social dealings.
If these two parties wanted to either go to court or hire an arbitrator they wouldn't know which laws to use to regulate the transaction. They might have both made the deal under the assumption that their physical country's laws were protecting them.
In Bitnation, the DBVN that the members belong to forms the legal framework for their contract. This simplifies the process of arbitration by removing borders and complicated multi-jurisdictional laws.
## WHY BLOCKCHAIN?
The blockchain is great at creating immutable proof of transactions and at its core Bitnation is a framework for recording, timestamping, and notarizing contracts. The blockchain record is what makes the contracts agreed to in a DBVN stand up in real-world courts.
I learned this after asking the team how a marriage that is illegal based on the country of the participants would be recognized in the real world. The team responded with:

## THE TOKEN(s)
Bitnation uses a four token approach which is unique within blockchain products. In many ways, it is similar to the different versions of STEEM on Steemit.com.
The main token which is ERC20 based and exchangeable is PAT, or Pangea Arbitration Token. PAT tokens. PAT is used to pay for some services but is mainly earned as a reward for contributing to the community. The amount of PAT earned is based on three non-tradable reputation tokens.
The three tokens are:
1. Proof-of-Agreement (POA): A non-tradable reputation token for Pangea users and arbitrators.
2. Proof-of-Collective (POC): A non-tradable reputation token for DBVNs, user groups and governance services created on Pangea.
3. Proof-of-Nomic (PON): A non-tradable reputation token for contracts, laws and legal codes governed by user satisfaction.
## THE TEAM

In 2014 the team created the first pilot program for blockchain based marriage certificates and world citizenship ID.

In 2015, the team created Pangea on the Horizon Chain and launched the pilot for land titles and birth certificates. In the same year, Bitnation began their work with refugee identification and also helped Estonia establish a blockchain based notary for their E-residency program.

In 2017, the team won a UNESCO award for the work with refugee identification systems.
## SUMMARY
This is a unique project that is not presenting the commonly seen approach or take a real business and move it to the blockchain. Bitnation is addressing an issue that already exists, especially for refugees and for those in highly restricted countries.
At the same time, Bitnation is addressing a problem that the blockchain is creating which is the lack of governance. A great strength of blockchain and cryptocurrency is that it removes borders but at the same time it removes some of the safety that regulations provide. Bitnation will allow individuals to join nations that provide only the safety that they want and need without having to leave their home.
