सरोवर का सुंदर तीर । एक भौंरा तथा एक गुबरीला । भ्रमर कमल-कोष से मकरन्द पान करने वाला तथा गुबरीला गोबर में रहने वाला । किन्तु संयोग से दोनों में मैत्री हो गई । एक दिन भ्रमर ने गुबरीले को आमन्त्रित किया ।

“भाई गुबरीले ! इक दिन मेरे घर चलो । देखो कि मैं कितने सुंदर स्थान में रहता हूँ ।”

गुबरीले ने उत्तर दिया – “कैसी बातें करते हो मित्र ! भला गोबर से भी उत्तम पदार्थ इस संसार में कोई हो सकता है क्या ?”

भ्रमर ने मंद मुस्कराहट और मधुर गुंजन सहित कहा – “मित्र ! चलकर देखो तो सही । एक बार अपने मित्र का कहना भी मान लो ।”

मित्रता का सम्मान रखते हुए गुबरीले ने भ्रमर के घर जाना स्वीकार तो कर लिया, किन्तु चलते-चलते उसने गोबर की एक गोली अपने मुख में यह सोचकर रख ली कि क्या पता फिर कभी गोबर खाने को मिले या न मिले ?

अत: गुबरीला अपने भ्रमर मित्र के साथ कमलवन में जा पहुंचा । वहां की छटा और सुंगधिपूर्ण वातावरण का क्या कहना । कुछ देर के स्वागत सत्कार के पश्चात भ्रमर ने गुबरीले से पूछा – “कहो बंधु ! तुम्हें यहां कैसा लगा ?”
किन्तु गुबरीले की तो हालत खराब थी । कमल पुष्पों की भीनी-भीनी सुगन्ध के कारण उसे गोबर की दुर्गन्ध पूरी तरह नहीं आ रही थी । इससे उसका मन विकल हो रहा था । अथवा ऐसा कहें कि गोबर की दुर्गन्ध के कारण उसे कमल की सुगन्ध का अनुभव नहीं हो रहा था । कुछ भी हो वह तो यही सोच रहा था कि हाय, मैं कहां आ फंसा ? उसने उत्तर दिया – “बन्धु ! तुमने मुझे स्वर्ग के समान गोबर के ढेर में से निकालकर यहां किस नरक में ला पटका ? मुझे तो तुम कृपा कर मेरे ही स्थान पर शीघ्र पहूँचा दो ।”

भ्रमर विचारवान था । उसने ध्यान से देखा तो जान गया कि गुबरीले के मुख में गोबर की गोली दबी पड़ी है । मंद मधुर गुंजन के साथ उसने कहा – “मित्र गुबरीले, तुम रहे गुबरीले के गुबरीले । अरे, इस सुंदर मनोहारी कमलवन में आकर भी तुमसे यह गोबर न छूटा ? जरा इसे फ़ेंक दो, मेरा कहा मानों और फिर कहो कि तुम्हें यहां कैसा प्रतीत होता है ।”

गुबरीले ने बड़े दुःख के साथ अपनी प्रिय वस्तु मुंह से निकालकर थूक दी । मुख शुद्ध किया । इसके पश्चात कुछ ही देर में उसे कमल पुष्पों की मन्द-मन्द, मधुर-मधुर आत्मा को प्रफुल्लित कर देने वाली सुरभि का अनुभव होने लगा । वह तो मानों चमत्कृत-सा हो गया ।

भ्रमर ने पूछा – “कहो मित्र ! अब अपने घर जाना चाहते हो ।”

गुबरीले को ज्ञान हो गया था, उसने उत्तर दिया – “अरे बंधू ! अब परिहास न करो । ऐसा कौन मुर्ख होगा जो इस स्वर्ग का त्याग कर उस नरक में जाना चाहेगा ?”

अत: धन, सन्तान इत्यादि इस संसार में गोबर के समान है । उसका त्याग कर यदि हम अपनी आत्मा के अनन्त सुखमय कमल की सुगन्ध ग्रहण करें तो सच्चा सुख प्राप्त हो सकता है । सांसारिक प्रलोभनों में आकर्षण तभी तक है जब तक हमने अपनी आत्मा के स्वरूप को नहीं जाना है । उस आत्म-स्वरूप को जानकर हमें अभिलाषा को समाप्त करना चाहिए । अभिलाषा समाप्त होगी तो आनन्द का उदय होगा ।

प्रत्येक मानव को अपने जीवन का वास्तविक मूल्यांकन करना चाहिए । तत्त्व को जानना चाहिए । तत्त्व के ज्ञान के अभाव में सच्चे और शाश्वत सुख की आशा करना आकाश-कुसुम की अभिलाषा करना है ।

इस तत्व ज्ञान के अभाव में मनुष्य कितने भ्रम में पड़ा रहता है तथा कैसा अभिमान करने लगता है इसका उदाहरण घनश्यामदास बिड़ला के एक संस्मरण से प्रकट होता है ।
