A farm for cryptocurrency mining that operated with stolen electricity was discovered in the facilities of a former factory, in the Orenburg region, southeast of Moscow, in Russia. As a result of the incident, two people were arrested.

The information was released on April 11 by the Ministry of the Interior of that country, and adds that high-tech equipment for the production of cryptocurrencies was found there. It involved more than 6,000 units connected to a network with power cables that led to a nearby sub-station.


 
The mining farm was discovered due to the detection of a high consumption of electricity in the aforementioned area, which was reported by employees of energy companies. The complaint led to an investigation by the Ministry of Interior, together with members of the Russian National Guard, who were in charge of inspecting the place.

In this regard, the official representative of the Ministry, Irina Volk, said that the work of the mining farm was carried out by stealing electricity, without taking into account that an electric power consumption of more than 8 million kilowatts per hour could attract attention .

The official adds that the investigations allowed to identify two men, managers of the old company that worked in the territory where they established the mining farm. Both were arrested as suspects of being the miners. Individuals will be prosecuted for the crime of causing damage to property, provided for in article 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
 
At the same time, local media disseminate information about the discovery of the farm and the detention of those identified as the responsible miners, noting that complaints about the high consumption of electricity had been made since last March and that the police have not provided details on the profitability and the scale of the farm.

## LEGALITY OF MINING AND ELECTRICAL CONSUMPTION
The regulation of cryptocurrency mining is one of the issues that occupies many governments, an important issue in terms of filling legal gaps and establishing rules for the operation of farms. In particular, Russia is one of the countries where government officials have proposed to regulate cryptocurrency mining, beginning by outlawing activity in residential areas.

In this regard, the federal government raised a few months ago the idea of ​​banning mining in these areas, because of the danger posed by heat emissions for people. This added to the proposal that the energy consumption for the mining activity is not sustainable over time.
