The United States of Earth
In 1893 Representative Lucas Miller of Wisconsin proposed a constitutional amendment changing the name of the United States of America to the United States of Earth. His reasoning behind this was the republic would eventually grow to such size that every nation of the world would become a state in the United States of Earth.

Not being able to foresee two world wars and numerous other conflicts in the future, it's understandable why Representative Miller would have this belief. During his life time (September 15, 1824 – December 4, 1902), Representative Miller watched the United States grow from 24 states to 44 states prior to his recommendation of changing the name of the country. Starting with Arkansas (June, 1836) through Idaho and Wyoming (July, 1890) he had observed the number of states almost double.

Lucas Miltiades Miller had an interesting life. At the age of four he was an orphan living in Livadia, Greece. Miller was adopted by Col. Jonathan P. Miller, an American serving in the Greek army during the Greek Revolution. After the war Col. Miller took his son home to Vermont. The young Representative Miller studied law and eventually practiced in Oshkosh, WI. Prior to being elected to congress, Miller served Wisconsin as a member of the Wisconsin State assembly in 1853 and was commissioner of the Wisconsin Board of Public Works. He also served ten years as chairman of the Winnebago County Board of Supervisors. In 1891, Miller was elected to the 52nd congress as the country's first Greek American U.S. Congressman but failed to win re-election in 1892. Representative Miller passed away on December 4, 1902 in Oshkosh, WI and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery.

Not to be forgotten, on April 20, 2013 the American Philhellenes Society erected a memorial in Oshkosh to Col. Jonathan Miller and his son Lucas Miller. The American Philhellenes Society works to recognize those who made contributions during the 1821 Revolution.

Well I'll be. How in the world did you find this story?

He had such a naive but special view of the world. And such respect for this country with his Greek heritage. So many good things in his story.

Rather glad he did not see the turmoil of all the conflucts ahead. He would have been saddened and discouraged.

I have to admit, not being a native Oshkoshian I knew nothing about Mr. Miller and the history of his family.

Unfortunately, one of our most active local historians passed away recently. You might recall my post honoring C.J. (Clarence Jungwirth), or I would have been able to ask him more. I have two of his books on the history of Oshkosh. Maybe I can find a reference, see if CJ knew any inside scoop.

Will prowl around Riverside. It is huge. I imagine we can narrow down where the Miller family is located, share a picture in his memory.

Thank you Mike!

Believe it or not, the start of this was Diet Snapple Peach Tea.

On the inside of the lid of the tea there is always a bit of trivia, a recent one was about the United States of Earth. It sounded weird to me, so I did a little investigating.

Ok, that is weird. It started with the lid to a tea bottle. Who would have guessed.

Back to coincidence. Someone else seeing that might not have heard of or cared about Oshkosh. Purpose defeated. What is the purpose of triva on a tea bottle lid by the way? We pay to have that researched, formatted, printed to be tossed. Sorry, got off subject.

Glad you were curious.
