I almost walked right into this mass of hairy Yellownecked caterpillars - 4 original photos
These guys are eating the leaves off a tree near where I live. They've slowly munched their way through a pretty big area of branches! Once they fatten up on leaves, they drop and dig into the ground, and then they turn into simple-tooking brown moths.

I had no idea that when caterpillars like these were fat enough they dropped to the ground, I just always assumed like butterflies they cocooned it - awesome to learn something new :) Cheers

Did you see those caterpillars in your dreams, too? : ) Are you on the lookout for your Black-billed Cuckoos? Tree caterpillars are one of their favored foods sources, and the birds are declining in population. They follow outbreaks of webworms, tent caterpillars, and even gypsy moths. Otherwise, they can be hard to find.
