What can you do on a Saturday if not a nice trip in the heart of Tuscia?

The **Tuscia** was the way in which the Romans called the land of the Etruscans where today stands the province of Viterbo, in my region, Lazio, but the Etruscans also spread to Tuscany and Umbria as early as the VIII BC, even before the Romans.
The village of **Castel Sant'Elia** that we visited today also has Etruscan origins, and like other centers of Etruscan origin this too stands on a tufaceous spur, but the historic center of the village is closed within ancient walls and is accessed via a door with a tower and coats of arms of the Farnese family. From the square near the door you can admire a breathtaking view over the valley, the **Suppentonia valley**.

Cosa si può fare di sabato se non una bella gita nel cuore della Tuscia?

La **Tuscia** era il modo in cui i Romani chiamavano la Terra degli Etruschi in cui oggi sorge tutta la provincia della città di Viterbo, nella mia regione il Lazio, ma gli Etruschi si diffusero anche in Toscana e Umbria già nell'VIII a.C., ancora prima dei Romani.
Ha origini etrusche anche il **borgo di Castel Sant'Elia** che abbiamo visitato oggi, e come altri centri di origine etrusca anche questo sorge su uno sperone tufaceo, ma il centro storico del borgo è chiuso all'interno di antiche mura e vi si accede tramite una porta con torre e stemmi della famiglia Farnese. Dalla piazza vicina alla porta si può ammirare un panorama mozzafiato sulla vallata, la **valle Suppentonia**.

The peculiarity of this village is the suggestive Romanesque basilica dedicated to S. Elia from which it takes its name, which is located at the base of the valley and can be reached on foot via a path nicknamed **"the road of the saints"**. Built at the beginning of the 11th century, it immediately became an important pilgrimage destination.

La particolarità di questo borgo è la suggestiva basilica romanica intitolata a S. Elia da cui prende il suo nome, che si trova alla base delle valle e si può raggiungere a piedi attraverso un sentiero soprannominato **“la strada dei santi”**. Costruita agli inizi del XI secolo divenne subito un'importante meta di pellegrinaggio.

Absolutely to see the complex of the **Franciscan Convent**, it is accessed by crossing a long tree-lined avenue that leads to the **Basilica of San Giuseppe**, the cave dug into the tuff that houses the canvas of the **Madonna ad Rupes** where today stands the homonymous Sanctuary and everything is immersed in the green, an evocative place that combines nature and spirituality, giving a mystical and slightly out of time atmosphere.

Also for this trip out of town we traveled a long way since Castel Sant'Elia is located a hundred kilometers from my house, but when it comes to discovering new places it is always worth it.

Assolutamente da vedere il complesso del **Convento Francescano**, si accede attraversando un lungo viale alberato che porta alla **Basilica di San Giuseppe**, la grotta scavata nel tufo che custodisce la tela della **Madonna ad Rupes** dove oggi sorge l'omonimo Santuario e il tutto è immerso nel verde, un luogo suggestivo che unisce natura e spiritualità, regalando un'atmosfera mistica e un po' fuori dal tempo.

Anche per questa gita fuori porta abbiamo percorso parecchia strada visto che Castel Sant'Elia si trova a un centinaio di chilometri da casa mia, però quando si tratta di conoscere nuovi luoghi ne vale sempre la pena.
