Coding the Free Mind. Can we Influence Behaviour on Steem?
With HF21 looming, there's a lot of talk happening and a lot of disagreement on whether the changes will be good or bad. Yet, it was what @whatsup said that made the most sense. What is Steem’s vision?

If everyone was on the same page as to what Steem is, then making laws in code to encourage everyone to go in that direction would be easy. Unfortunately, everyone has their own vision of what Steem is and they often don't match.

For a long time, many of us thought that it was a social media platform and that's where we were trying to help take it. Steepshot was added to give us the Instagram side of things, but those posts were frowned upon for not having enough text with them. DMania was added for the memes and people complained about those who got lots of upvotes for just posting a meme.

<center>![images (10).jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQvR6ME3t3EWbkA7KDiN1ACErK9E8hhc2Lq6C8SnmRbXZ/images%20(10).jpeg)</center>

Then came Steemhunt, an earner for finding new innovations on the internet; then Actifit, a community for the ones who want to support one another in their fitness goals...followed by the usual complaints that they weren't quality posts.

<H2><center>Yet that is social media. The disagreements and the arguments are all social media too.</center></H2>

***

So is Steem instead a blogging and information platform (like Medium?), where quality work gets rewarded? I believe that was the vision when it started out and even when I arrived, mid 2017, there was still a good chance of a newbie getting a @curie and/or a @blocktrades vote on a quality article and getting up near $100 mark. This was before all the Apps started coming in. I think only Busy was around at that point.

As an occasional writer for magazines, I have to say that if the vision is still the quality articles, then it's not working. I get a minimum of $180 AUD for every article published in one of the magazines, so you can imagine that if I'm going to spend hours on something, it's going to be sent there first. If it were to be rejected, then I'd probably throw it on here so it didn't go to waste, but when the magazine takes them, they have paid for them exclusively, so I can't then put them on here as well.

So my verdict? Steem is not working as a platform to support quality writing which would attract writers here. Yet I feel like HF21 is trying to guide it back to that, but I'm not sure it can. If it did, then some of the Apps would be defunct.

As we take on board more people, then the visions for this platform are going to vary all the more and no one code is ever going to be able to guide people towards the right “desirable behaviour.” Someone is always going to be unhappy, someone will always be trying to “game the system.” If you could get it to work for one vision, then it's always going to be exclusive and cut out a larger portion of the population. So do we want to on-board more people or do we want to make sure we can give good enough payouts to attract good writers? The more people we on-board, the more thinly the pool is spread and the less everyone can earn. You can't have everything.

<H2><center>Welcome to life.</center></H2>

***

There are a lot of things being done on here that I don't agree with, but I focus on what I do agree with and don't try to stir things up elsewhere. That's my philosophy in the real world and on other social media platforms too. Just because I don't agree with something, it doesn't make it wrong.

HF21 will likely go ahead with whatever changes are planned and they will either work how people want them to or they won't. After reading a post from @nonameslefttouse, there is only one change that I would suggest which I think would benefit everyone, except the bidbot users. Change the trending page to being based on interaction. I know some would try to game that too, probably with comment bots, but I'm sure that could be counteracted to a point. Then the hot page could be the highest earning posts, but it wouldn't be where the outsiders are landing, giving them a false impression. Those that are earning naturally, instead of via bidbots, will likely be on trending too.

Anyway, those are my thoughts for the day. I have appointments to keep and kitchens to clean...

Steem and Steemit have gone the way of so many valiant endeavours... It's dropped to the LCD.

It is far from what it was when I started and like any other statistics based endeavour it is wide open to gaming.

Quality writing is only rewarded for its quality if people l get to read it, so we have to band together in self supporting groups and teams to drive up the value of articles. That doesn't work in the long run either, as often folks are voting for posts based on the team tag and not on the content. Etsy went the same way and now team activities on there are of minimal value.

It's maths, a mathematical system and those good at maths will benefit at the expense of quality writers. You write excellent stuff and are rewarded mainly through your team building efforts. I write similarly themed material but am not so hooked into the team stuff, so do a little worse on the $ stakes. We both do much better writing for magazines.

I've dabbled in promotion and bots and have benefited but it's an empty victory so I only keep minnowbooster and SBI going to offset the days I can't post. SBD 0.0001 is better than nothing for doing nothing!

I would like to see success of posts based on the number of comments received per post. It's much better than waiting for a whale or a bot to notice us.

I do think that it could still be something if it evolves into social media, but it will need to be easier to onboard. People like you are reaching so many on Facebook, but how many of them are here? Just us. As a social media site, I wouldn't expect to be earning much, certainly not a living, but as an author I'd hope to have the chance to do a bit better on the strength of my work.

Most people with successful websites or YouTube channels usually just copy their work over here for a few extra dollars, but don't interact much, because it's not worth it. That's just fact. People keep saying we need to make this the place that people being censored on other platforms can come to, but we can't make it worth their while. Their audience isn't here, it's hard for them to bring them over and they'll have to start from scratch at building their account up to a good earning level. DTube try to make it more worthwhile, but they can't upvote everyone and their platform is still nowhere near as useable as YouTube. I have yet to be able to upload anything successfully and quite often I can't even watch videos.

Facebook is much much easier to use and folks go there without the expectation of profit. Also you hand over the IP for everything you post on FB plus they actively use your data to recruit others to their platform.

Compare that to clunky old Steemit where even opening an account is a headache. Then there's those horrible passwords and the many keys that folks have but never use. Add to that the fact that losing a password is fatal to your account balances and its all enough to put folks off completely.

I started just copying other posts and texts from my other platforms but found a small but receptive audience here, mainly through the GHSC.

Responses to my posts are less than in other platforms but I know they're genuine.

As for the apps and other services, Steepshot just stopped accepting my password. Dtube is as clunky and complicated to use as an old Ford. I've given upon it because I fill in all the info for the post, upload using that horrible interface and when I try to post, it goes into neverland and I need to restart my phone. That doesn't give a good user experience.

Steemit wasn't designed by corporate interests and was designed with security in mind. Unfortunately, that doesn't lead to slick interfaces.

The community will remain folks who want something a little private and a little special and who are willing to put up with the nuances of the system.

As I mentioned, it is a system based on maths and statistics and the self reinforcing rules of any social media still apply.

That's why a 1000 word with pics, detailed article on urban farming will never perform as well as a post titled 'STEEM TO THE MOON!' containing a gif of Gene Wilder.

Steem opened the door to speculators and can never go back

I think the biggest disadvantage of having this place decentralized is the obvious lack of a common vision. There's just too many people with too many grand ideas and unfortunately, Steemit. Inc is not helping to synchronise all that

It's the libertarian ethic of individuals maximising their profits leading to a "common" maximised vision. Unfortunately that's all bollocks. An actual common vision would be welcome.

That's the thing, isn't it? Because anyone can build anything on the blockchain, then anything can be created, so they can't really control that. Perhaps each of the things on the blockchain need to be isolated themselves, so that they don't necessarily show up on everyone else's feeds. At the moment, people are on here for different reasons and aren't interested in everything happening. The only things that don't get plastered everywhere are Splinterlands and Musing.

You'll see how active my posts are, consistently. Takes a lot of time and energy to give everyone a response, or a personalized joke, just for them, little one liners. I don't get anything for that other than the satisfaction of *being nice.* The crap clutters of the top of the feeds, and what I got going on is hidden. The underground, that's what I call it.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of this Author promotion model they are promoting. I get it, and I am not saying it can't be successful, I just think it limits the market too much.

Still with Scot tokens and projects like PAL at least I have some hope that someone else will find a better financial plan, but really I want some marketing.

I was getting way too snarky with thinking about steem discussions (it's nothing to do with you or this post, unless I've violently misunderstood something I'm pretty sure we're thinking along similar lines, just other stuff invading my brain XD) so to answer your title I don't know about coding but behaviour influencing on a large scale like what we're talking about isn't hard, it just takes way, way longer than people (especially these days) are used to/will tolerate. I really don't mind if people ragequit. There might be something here for everyone eventually but not yet apparently.

And I don't mind the experimentation going on, it's kind of fun.

I was having a discussion with my daughter just the other day about the timescales needed to change behaviours. We want it all and we want it now. Such impatient creatures! 😆

>And I don't mind the experimentation going on, it's kind of fun.

And I think that's the attitude we need to take. Enjoy the experiment and see what happens. That's one of the things that keeps me interested.

I love your last paragraph. No matter the type of changes that would be made, not everyone will be satisfied with it. Some will be benefit a lot, while some won't.

The truth is that everyone sees steem differently from his own perspective.

Not everyone will love or have time reading articles. They might just prefer viewing memes or artwork to reading a long article.

However, whatever the case, we will keep steeming.

Thank you.
Life is what you make it. Even if it doesn't benefit us, there is usually space to make changes so we can still get something out of it.

*I focus on what I agree with.* LOVE it. Me too! Not upvoting actifit and believing that all things are possible. Social media is NOT journalism and never will-can be (says this qualified journalist) and expecting it to be that will end only in disappointment. Heavens above, Upwork paying out around $5. Let's see what surprises HF21 has in store and keep our hearts open.

"Surprises" is a good word to use for the HF. See what new things get added to the experiment.
