Following my original Steemit post, "Jan 16, 2018 Youtube’s new tightening rules following Logan Paul's controversial platform video abuse"...today I wanted to talk to you about the topic of Suicide and Mental Health that really hit home after Logan's video post from 2 weeks ago.

So how do I introduce this topic? In honesty it's a pretty tricky one because in my experience suicide and mental health is not an easy topic people generally want to discuss about....as an educator, an advocate, a supporter to suicide prevention, a bystander hearing individuals who had taken their own lives. What really sparked my journey in discussing this topic is due to Logan Paul- one of the highest youtube influencers- and a disrespectful video that he posted on New Years day 2018.

Video Summary: Logan and his friends entering into the Japan’s Aokigahara Forest, aka. “suicide forest”, where the group found the body of a young man hung himself to death possibly hours prior to the group's arrival. Public outcry and criticism followed over Logan Paul’s responses; from Logan showing to the audience of the man’s dead body, close-ups of certain body parts showing beginning signs of decay, as well as moments where he laughed and appearing insensitive on screen. In my opinion it appears that his intention was impure as he exploited the video as means to increase his channel's views.

In my opinion that the video itself was extremely uncomfortable and inappropriate for viewers; the Youtube star discarded the sensitivity of its content by posting a video of the deceased that happened to be someone's son/child, brother, cousin, nephew, extended family member, friend, and etc. Although the original video had already been taken down, but it was not until damage had been done and being viewed by 6+ million audience plus potentially further damaging the depressed children and adolescent population in Japan. It's sad how in defence Logan later claimed that he posted the video to raise awareness, however, he did not make an effort to provide resources to support those who viewed it. Additionally, to place the thumbnail of the video a photo of the deceased is downright unacceptable. It's cyberbullying to the living and the deceased.

Although I am not married or a parent myself, however, thinking from the perspective of a parent and the horrors finding out what children/teens being exposed to Logan Paul's video. To make situation potentially worse, consider that our children/teenage generations may not necessarily openly share what saw to their parents. Therefore I strongly urge for all parents, as my message to you, to connect with your children and monitor your children's ongoing internet capacity. There are so many creator contents via all sorts of social media platforms, and if your children watched this video it may also stir up emotions in which they may be impacted negatively. I sure did, to imagine the trauma of the family of the deceased...to find out from a youtube video of their loved one's death brought tears to my eyes.

It's the responsibility of parents to spend, connect and educate yourselves what your children are watching. Consider having your children watch in a public area where adults can also view what the children watching. Parents cannot completely trust the highest Youtube influencers to produce the most appropriate contents for their children to watch. If children come to you, listen to them and allow them to express themselves. Teach them, guide them as good parents and mentors, what suicide and mental health on social media means. In Logan Paul's majority of viewers are 14 year olds who had defended him and supporting him, and this is a good educational opportunity about the fine lines and boundaries around what is appropriate and inappropriate.

In essence I am taking an advocating and humanitarian stance by using my voice for good, by writing my opinion on this blog and to raise awareness/education to adults, parents, teens and children alike the seriousness of Suicide and Mental Health. Please, please, please share and re-steem this post to raise awareness to all adults and parents of the world who have loved ones that are teenagers and children...and to provide the support they need. My heart goes out to the loved ones for the deceased, the country of Japan, and anyone affected by this video and Suicide.
