Molfetta è un comune della provincia di Bari, nella regione italiana meridionale della Puglia. Situata sulla costa adriatica, Molfetta è uno dei centri di pesca più importanti della regione.

La sua storia risale al 4 ° secolo aC. I resti di un villaggio di pescatori e le tombe antiche hanno fornito le prove a tale scopo. Tuttavia, il documento più antico relativo alla città è del 925 dC.
Nell'undicesimo secolo la città fu sviluppata come porto commerciale.

Il centro medievale si trova sulla penisola conosciuta come di Sant'Andrea (la penisola di Sant'Andrea), dal nome dell'antica chiesa, menzionata per la prima volta nei documenti notarili nel 1126. La tradizione cittadina, che fa risalire le origini di Molfetta all'età greco-romana, non ha alcun supporto documentario. Le fonti, risalenti al X-XI secolo, offrono l'immagine di un borgo, in cui sono presenti già diverse chiese, che è cinto di mura a Sud e a Nord, sul mare, da una palazzata, interessante sistema abitativo-difensivo la cui struttura è tuttora visibile.

Famoso per i suoi vicoli "a lisca di pesce", il centro storico è dominato dal Duomo romanico di San Corrado, un gioiello architettonico della città vecchia con due torri (ognuna delle torri è alta 20 metri) e anche dal Torrione Passari e dalla Torre Calderina, appartenenti alle antiche mura della città e il Museo Diocesano.

Il nuovo Duomo, che è anche la chiesa di S. Maria Assunta in Cielo costruita nel 1610, è un altro monumento da vedere. I resti del patrono della città San Corrado di Baviera sono rimasti in questa chiesa in un busto reliquiario d'argento del santo. Risale al 17 ° secolo.

Piazza Municipio era l'antica piazza del Castello (distrutto nel 1416). Qui i turisti possono vedere la facciata rinascimentale del Palazzo Giovene, ora sede del municipio, la sala medievale intatta della Sala dei Templari, i resti delle proprietà della Chiesa di San Nicola.

Da visitare è la seicentesca Chiesa di San Pietro con l'alto campanile, che fu costruito sull'attuale chiesa medievale, e Vico Muro: stradina che si collega con la passeggiata panoramica sulle antiche mura della città antica.

Si consiglia di visitare l'antica chiesetta di Sant'Andrea risalente al XII secolo e ristrutturata nei secoli XVII e XVIII e la Basilica Santurario Madonna dei Martiri, fuori dal centro città.

Echi di una storia millenaria riecheggiano nel famoso "Pulo" di Molfetta, l'impressionante depressione carsica con un diametro di 170 metri e 30 metri di profondità, dove si trovano i resti di un insediamento neolitico. I frammenti di vasi chiamati "Molfetta", trovati in tutta l'area mediterranea, sono stati scoperti qui.

Molfetta is a town in the province of Bari, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. Located in the Adriatic Coast, Molfetta is one of the most important fishing centre in the region.

Its history dates back to 4th century BC. Remnants of a fishing village and the antique graves provided the evidence to this effect. However, the oldest document that relates to the city is from 925 CE. 
In the 11th century the city was developed as a commercial port.

The medieval center is located on the peninsula known as di Sant’Andrea (St. Andrew's  peninsula), named after the ancient church, mentioned for the first time in notarial documents in 1126. The local tradition, which traces Molfetta’s origins to the Greek -Roman age, has no documentary support. The sources dating back to the tenth or eleventh century, offer an image of a village where there are already several churches, which is surrounded by walls on the south and on north, on the sea, from a palace structure, an interesting defensive-living system whose structure is still visible. 

Famous for its “fishbone shaped” alleys, the historic center is dominated by the Romanesque Duomo of San Corrado, an architectural gem of the old city with two towers (each of the towers is 20 meters in height) and also by the Torrione Passari and  Torre Calderina, belonging to the ancient city wall and the Diocesan Museum. 

The new Cathedral which is also the church of S.Maria Assunta in Cielo which was built in 1610 is another monument to see. Remains of the patron of the city San Corrado of Bavaria is left in this church in a Silver reliquary bust of the saint. It dates back to 17th century.

Piazza Municipio was the ancient square of the Castle (destroyed in 1416). There tourists can see the Renaissance facade of Giovene Palace, now the town hall, the intact medieval room of the Templars’ Hall, the remains of the properties of the Church of St. Nicholas.

Worth visiting is the seventeenth-century Church of St. Peter with the tall bell tower, which was built on the existing medieval church, and Vico Muro: narrow street which connects with the panoramic walk on the ancient walls of the ancient town.

It is recommended to visit the ancient the small church of St Andrea dating back to the twelfth century and refurbished in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the Basilica Santurario Madonna dei Martiri, right outside the city centre.

A thousand- years old history echoes off the famous “Pulo” of Molfetta, the impressive karst depression with a 170 metres -wide diameter and 30 metres deep, where there are the rests of a Neolithic settlement. The vase fragments called “Molfetta”, found in the whole Mediterranean area,  were discovered here.

***Thing to see:*** The Historic Centre, the Duomo of San Corrado, the Torrione Passari, the Torre Calderina, the church of S.Maria Assunta in Cielo, the Giovene Palace, the Church of St. Peter, the Church of St Andrea, the Basilica Santurario Madonna dei Martiri, the “Pulo” of Molfetta.
