We are on the cusp of finishing the season. I received a lot of opinions from seasoned players on whether to rent or own my own sets. When my daily quest came up Death, I went ahead and rented a few heavy cards. To be honest the difference it made was immediate. I was suddenly catapulted through the ranks of Gold. I completed my daily quest in record time but ironically with the Death splinter excluded from my final battle, it was my own Life deck that put me over the top into Gold 1. 

That's where things got murky. At the higher levels the game mechanics get more challenging (as they should). With tighter mana caps or multiple game formats and excluded splinters I quickly found myself out of my depth in terms of broad deck assembly. 

Day two I found myself within spitting distance if Diamond 3 and just couldn't get over the hump. As of this writing I am still 100 or so points away with half a day until the season closes. 

So what's my point? 

The point is that just buying yourself a top level deck doesn't make you a top level player. There are card combinations, game permutations, potential opponent splinters that all interplay. Bottom line, renting a Champion deck will not guarantee you a Champion berth. 

So take the example of the proverbial tortoise against his antagonist hare, slow and steady will win the race. I am going to take my Gold 1 rewards, roll them back into building my core deck and fight my way back up again. Who knows? By next season end maybe I will be experienced enough to make a solid run for Diamond. 

The main thing is to have fun and keep playing.
