Celebrating World Book Day and Reading to Kids

# Dressing Up
So today was another fun day for the kids. They had a slightly delayed (due to snow last week) celebration for World Book Day. Mini Me 1 and 2 always wear fancy dress for school on this day and we like to get Mini Me 3 involved too. This year they went as Amelia Earhart from a women's history book, Hermione from the Harry Potter books and the Princess from The Princess and the Frog.

Mini Me 1 and 2 told me they didn't have their usual lessons today. Instead they just did fun activities and teachers from different classes came in to read them stories. There was a costume parade too.

# Bringing Books Alive
Me and Mini Me 3 had our own fun at the Children's Centre who had put on a celebration to mark the occasion. They had really tried to bring books alive for the kids and everyone was dressed as a character from a book. Each child was gifted a book to take home too. Mini Me 3 got 'Owl Babies' which is a lovely book and one which we didn't have at home.

# Magic for kids
Over the last two days I've developed a new respect and appreciation for the people who work hard to make things magical for kids. Children's enthusiasm for  learning begins early in life and usually in the form of fun story books. Although young kids won't remember everything they see right now, their experiences shape them as a person. 

# Helping kids with homework
Today I read this news story - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-43316741 - apparently UK parents help their kids less with homework than parents in other parts of the world. A survey of 27,830 parents in 29 countries found only 11% of UK parents spent an hour per day helping their children, far behind 62% in India. Coming from an Indian background I can totally see that. My own Dad put a lot of pressure on us to study and to do extra work at home.

# Enjoying learning 
Whilst I'm very grateful that he cared that much about our futures, this approach wasn't entirely effective. My sisters and I are very different personalities and that level of pressure wasn't right for all of us. It also slightly took the fun out of learning. And this is why I have eased off with the extra homework at home. That and the fact that it's not really possible to do extra homework with a toddler running around!  Instead I just help them with their homework if they need me to, if they are not confident on a particular subject I take time to explain it to them, and I read with them/to them. When I read with my kids, or get them to read to me, we discover new stories and facts together. They enjoy it and they enjoy learning. And that's my aim...to keep alive their enthusiasm for learning....and hope for the best! :-D

Yes I've changed my stance on this. I used to think they need to do extra homework to get ahead in life and did make them do extra learning at home. However, they didn't take too well to it and then I found when they learnt in their own way they did better at school. Now they tell me if they don't understand something and I help them. I'm not on their case anymore.

What a lovely post and those stats are crazy! 11% is rather low... I'm pretty sure our mum spent a lot more time with me and my sister. Wonder whether that's just buys parents relying on school teachers or private tutors?

Well I know both types of parents where I live...those who don’t really care about their kids education and so just leave them to it, and those who get private tuition for for all the major subjects!
