“Brothers, What we do in life, echoes in eternity’’, I wanted to start today's post with this unforgettable quote of ***Maximus  Decimus Meridius*** from the movie **Gladiator**.

Do you think that our doings actually echo in eternity? I hope that it does for many good people. Even though the gladiators are referred to as heroes in the history of cinema, unfortunately, the reality is a little different.

### Gladiator fights

It was seen in middle Italy, for the first time in history, in funerals of people who died in wars. It was believed that the blood of the captive enemy soldiers would relieve the soul of the dead, so they would put them on the arena to fight eachother. But the actual turning point of gladiator fights was when it reappeared in Roman funerals. Later on these fights got official and spreaded when the Roman senate recognized these fights as entertainment.

### Who were to be Gladiators
---
Firstly as all of know, slaves, war prisoners and convicts who were sentenced to death were put to a fight till death in the arena. So, is that it? Of course not..
Especially, free but broke people were also going to gladiator schools and becoming gladiators for money and fame. (Auctorati) and contracted gladiators (Gladiatores Sestertiarri)
Although not all the shows were for death, most of the gladiators only lived to their mid-20s.

These fights which continued for centuries came to an end as our concept of civilization advanced. But are the arenas left empty today? Okay, maybe this comparison will be a little harsh but the concept of entertainment and sports of the modern human is not going to a very good place.

### What about entertainment and sports of today?

Isn’t the consept of entertainment and sports of modern age becoming worse each day? The arenas are still full of people today, in soccer,basketball,rugby and many other sport branches.Don’t you think that the passion of success and winning is passing many other things?
Don’t you agree that todays hooliganism remind us of ancient age arenas? Didn’t the groving sports economy and astronomical wages of sportsmen raise the expectations and rivalry too much? And aren’t everything done just for money?
Well, what was the actual purpose of sports? What was its main benefit to human and humanity? And were is it now..? I want you to think about this just for a moment.

### Modern age gladiators (Gladiatores Sestertiarri) ; professional sportsmen

Yes, most of us are a fan of elite sportsmen and would give anything to be in their place, wouldn’t we? But all the sportsmen that fortunate? Of course not, this is not the thing I want to talk about anyway.

The professional career of sportsmen is actually pretty short for gaining money, fame and success. Just like the lifetime of the gladiators..
Yes, nobody is fighting till death anymore but the fight is becoming more and more brutal .

Trainings getting harder and harder, more frequent competitions and the rivalry reaching very ruthless limits, forces sportsmen to use their physiological limits to the highest level. They are dissipating their body with performance enhancing dopings or non-doping suppliments and not a very healthy life is waiting for them after their career.

Isn’t it **funny** that the sports we do for a **healthier and longer life** becomes a **deadly weapon** when it turns from amateur to professionalism.
And we are up against the case of sudden sportsmen deaths we hear a lot in recent years. This, of course, isn’t connected to only one reason. 
This is why my next post will be about sportsmen deaths and what lies behind this deplorable tragedy.

Gladyatörler her ne kadar sinema tarihinde, kahramanlık hikayeleri olarak anlatılsa da maalesef gerçekte durum biraz farklı.

###  Gladyatör dövüşleri:

Tarihte ilk kez orta İtalyada, savaşlarda yitirilen kişilerin cenazelerinde, görülmüştür. Düşman asker esirleri dövüştürülerek, dökülen kanın ölen kişinin ruhunu rahatlattığına  inanılyormuş. Ama gladyatör dövüşlerinin esas dönüm noktası, Romada  yine cenaze törenlerinde ortaya çıkmasıyla olmuş. Daha sonra Roma senatosunun bu dövüşleri bir eğlence aracı olarak tanımasıyla yaygınlaşmış ve resmiyet kazanmış.

### Kimler  Gladyatör oluyordu?

Öncelikle hepinizin bildiği gibi savaş esirleri, köleler, ölüm cezasına çarptırılan suçlular arenada ölümüne bir kavgaya tutuşuyorlar. Peki ya sadece bunlar mı ? hayır tabiî ki de.
Özellikle parasız kalan özgür insanlar da para ve şöhret için gladyatör okuluna gidip gladyatör oluyordu. (Auctorati) ve sözleşmeli gladyatörler (Gladiatores Sestertiarri)

Bütün gösteriler, ölüm için yapılmıyordu ama gladyatörlerin çoğu  20li yaşların ortasına kadar yaşıyordu.


Yüzlerce yıl devam eden bu gösteriler, insanların medeniyet kavramlarının gelişmesi ile bir son buldu…peki ya günümüzde arenalar boş mu kaldı?

Tamam belki bu benzetme biraz acımasız olacak ama modern insanın eğlence ve spor anlayışı da çok da iyi noktalara gitmiyor.
 



### Ya günümüzde eğlence ve spor?

Modern çağ eğlence ve spor tarzı her geçen gün biraz daha kötüye gitmiyor mu? Arenalar bugünde doluyor, futbol, basketbol, rugby ve pek çok spor dalında, başarı ve kazanma hırsı sizce de bir çok şeyin önününe geçmeye başlamadı mı? 
 Sizce de günümüzün holiganizmi antik çağ arenalarını anımsatmıyor mu?
 Büyüyen spor ekonomisi ve sporculara verilen astronomik kontratlar beklenti ve rekabeti çok yukarılara taşımadı mı? Ve artık her şey sadece kazanmak için yapılmıyor mu?
Peki sporun amacı neydi? Neydi insana ve insanlığa temel katkısı? 
Ve bugün hangi noktaya geldi… Sadece bir an bunu düşünmenizi istiyorum?

### Modern çağ gladyatörleri (Gladiatores Sestertiarri); profesyonel sporcular:

Evet bir çoğumuz elit sporculara hayranız ve onların yerinde olmak için neler vermezdik değil mi? Peki tüm sporcular bu kadar şanslı mı tabi ki hayır, zaten bahsetmek istedigim şey de bu değil.

Sporcuların profesyonel kariyerleri para, şöhret, başarı yakalamak için aslında oldukca kısadır. Tıpkı gladyatörlerin ömürleri gibi…
Tamam artık kimse öldürmek için yarışmıyor ama mücadele gittikçe ölümüne bir hal alıyor...

Giderek artan antreman tempoları, daha sık düzenlenen müsabakalar ve rekabetin çok acımasız sınırlara gelmesi, sporcuları fizyolojik sınırlarını en üst sevide kullanmaya zorluyor… burada performans artırıcı doping ya da doping olmayan takviyeler ile kendi bedenlerini erken yaşta tüketmekteler ve kariyer sonrası için çok da sağlıklı bir hayat beklemiyor onları.

Ne garip degil mi sağlıklı ve uzun bir ömür için spor, amatörlükten profesyonellige döndükçe, giderek öldürücü bir silah olmaya başlıyor…
 Ve son yıllarda çokça duyduğumuz ani sporcu ölümleri tablosu ile karşılaşıyoruz. Tabi ki bu tek bir sebebe bağlı değil.

Bu yüzden bir sonraki yazım; büyük bir trajedi olan, ani sporcu ölümleri ve bunun altında yatan faktörler hakkında olacak…
