Children should be treated with respect and given their space
As we become Parents we feel that we have all the rights over our Children and with this belief there are times when we forget that Children also have their own identity and an Intellect and we need to respect that. Most of the Parents I see literally dominate their Children, they feel Children absolutely have no understanding of right and wrong and hence they should always be under their guidance and instructions or that children always need to be in their periphery.

When I say Children need their Space. It is just not about the physical space that you give them. It is not like you give some free time to your child to spend in the manner they desire. It is more about the space that you can give them to reduce their dependability. Specially their Grand Parents generation they cannot accept that the Children of today's age can be born much smarter and intelligent then them. Their general belief is that because they have lived more they know more, and hence they are always right, which in turn takes away the Child's freedom and power in terms of thinking and decision making capabilities.

Specially in the Indian culture I see this very common, when they are very young all their moves are restricted. For e.g. when a child just starts crawling and wants to reach out to every corner of the house, and then there are all the restrictions on the little baby to not touch this and that. The curiosity of the child builds up so much that they are always eyeing then to grab that thing which is the most restricted for them. This is just one type of an example where we restrict the space for a child.

There are times when our children want to be alone by themselves for whatever reasons, but elders do have problem with that also. End number of questions will be bombarded to them. It is good to keep a check over your children but not good to keep nagging them all the time.

If there is an important topic at home being discussed and the little Child gives some suggestion, there are many times when the elders give a deaf ear saying "Oh what do you know about this". Point is not about knowing it or not. Point is whatever suggestion is being given should be respected and given a ear to make the child feel Yes I am a part of this discussion. When we continuously keep ignoring to what our Children have to say, we also ruin their self-confidence.

If the Child keeps getting ignored all the time then there is a possibility they will revolt and then they will be termed as rebellion.

The fact is that Children are born with a high level of intelligence, and we have not yet been able to respect it. Children are the most exploited class in the world, even more than women. They are so helpless and naive that they do not even fight. We elders leave no room to destroy this level of intelligence because we only measure things with experience and age.

It is very important that we give our Children space in every way by keeping a track. Physically and Emotionally, It's ok they make mistakes, they say wrong things or get into a little trouble. We can always sort that out for them. But in this process they will learn the real life lessons and just not the book lessons. It should also not happen that the Child gets so much space that the parent gets clueless of what is happening.

By our own behavior when we can teach our children the importance of respect and space, when they grow up they will imbibe this behavior in every area of their life.
