Great '80s Movies #1 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
#### My first movie review for this exciting new platform is one of my all-time favourites. The 1980's classic comedy; Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Released in the US in June 1986 and the UK 1987 and starring a young Matthew Broderick in the starring role, it quickly became a cult classic amongst teenagers of the day.

####

Now let's start by saying that US High School bubblegum comedies are not exactly my favourite genre, in fact, generally speaking, I despise them. So why this one?

#### First of all, let's have a look at the story.....
Ferris Bueller is a lovable rogue, a very popular guy at school and he decides he wants to take a day off and have a memorable day out. Not wanting to be alone, he enlists his girlfriend, Sloane and best friend, the dysfunctional, geeky Cameron to join him on his adventure.

Am ingenious plan has been devised involving a faked illness for himself, and a death in the family of his girlfriend and together with his Cameron and his Cameron's Father's beloved and rare Ferrari, they head into Chicago to hustle and dupe their way to expensive dinners, appearing in and singing in front of a crowd of thousands in a parade and taking in a game at Wrigley's Field.

Back at school, both Ferris's sister, Jeannie ( played by Jennifer Grey of Dirty Dancing fame), who despises his popularity and parental favouritism and his Principal, Mr Rooney are on his case and attempting to track him down to face the music.

When Ferris and his friends pick up the car from the parking Garage they discover the attendants have been out joy-riding in it and racked up the mileage and in an effort to reverse the odometer so as not to get found out by Camerons Father whom Cameron hates and is afraid of, they jack it up in the garage and leave it running in reverse. This doesn't end well as the car falls off the jacks and ends up crashing through the garage wall and into a ravine, totalling it!

Despite Ferris offering to take the heat, Cameron plans to admit his actions to his father and accept the consequences,
deciding to stand up to him for the first time in his life.

Ferris gets home just in time in a race across the gardens to beat his parents to the house, which his principal has attempted to break into to prove Ferris is not ill at home in bed but is thwarted when Jeannie mistakes him for a burglar and attacks him before calling the police. The Principal flees leaving Jeannie to be arrested by the police on suspicion of making a crank call and meets another delinquent (played by a young but already famous Charlie Sheen) at the Police station and falling for him as her mother comes to pick her up.

Ferris gets home before them by a matter of seconds and his parents enter his bedroom to find him tucked up in bed feeling a little better!

#### So why is it so good?
John Hughes, who was the de facto teen movie producer of the age, wrote and directed it and his casting of Matthew Broderick as the 17-year-old lead was a stroke of genius; his performance was masterful and assured, with my only slight criticism being that it detracted from an almost equally great performance by Alan Ruck playing the neurotic and down-trodden Cameron.

The film was also notable for the main protagonist talking directly to camera. This, as far as I know, was unheard of!

Amongst a teenage audience, everyone wanted to be Ferris, a wise beyond his years' high school hero, who had charm by the bucket but a wistful poignancy and maturity beyond his years. The characters were instantly likeable, in my case, especially the drop-dead gorgeous Sloane played with ease by Mia Sara.

###### Mia Sara - lets just pause and reflect! Wonder what happened to her?
####

>Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around you might miss it.

The movie is more than just good fun and a postcard-pretty picture of Chicago, it should have been a cliche-ridden piece of throwaway light entertainment but instead turned into the perfect capture of middle class mid-'80s US high school attitudes and the totally relatable hopes and fears of the youngsters about to attain adulthood.

#### John Hughes of course also wrote and directed 'The Breakfast Club', another brilliant teen movie, but that's for another day!!
