*Penglipur lara* are the storytellers. They traveled the land like nomads, sharing tales and songs of the people, with the people. Although time has changed, the concept of *penglipur lara* remains.

Through the historical times in the nusantara, to the era of the Sultanate and the fall of Melaka, they moved from place to place telling stories from the cries of war and the cheering of peace. Verbal storytelling then evolved to the show of *Wayang kulit* and then the stage performance of the *Bangsawan*.

The introduction of film in the late 19th century and its spread through the British colonialism changed the role of *penglipur lara* ever so greatly. *Bangsawan* performers adapted themselves in with the new way of working and it is visible in the great black and white film of old.

Thus come the magical era of **P.Ramlee** and **Studio Jalan Ampas.**

The role of film has gone from just entertainment to something that can shape a nation. Realizing the potential, the one in power grab hold of the control on what story goes in and out to the people. The battle against the propagandists who has abused the power of film into their favour still at play until today. The rebel in **Nasir Jani** and the filasufist in **U-Wei Bin HajiSaari** is among the other purists that fight on.

God works through art and He has opened a new way for penglipur lara to tell their stories with the coming of age of the digital media. Storytellers grew around like mushrooms after a downpour starting with **Amir Muhammad** with **Lips to Lips** which started a decade known as *‘The Little Cinema of Malaysia’.*

The constant manipulation of power by *you-know-who* (despite after the change of government), I think has brought us to the brink of an alternative independent cinema. A new era approaches akin to the one started in the year 2000.

In my brief journey as a fan of cinema, I have experienced **Al Jafree Md Yusop** and **Abro Rivai** with **Mencari Rahmat** and **Karya**, **Bea Tanaka** and **Yasu Tanaka** with **Nota** and Pak **Hassan Abd Muthalib** himself sharing around tales and stories on the Malaysian cinema. These are some of our modern vagabond storytellers, travelling from one town to another, just like the *penglipur lara* of old.
