 ## NOOB FILM REVIEW - Spinning Gasing (2001) by Teck Tan ## SYNOPSIS A story about a band of youngsters who tries to start to their career in music in Kuala Lumpur but the members comes from all sorts of background and personality it seems almost impossible to find a common ground where things can work. Harry (Craig Fong) is a Malaysian Chinese who finished his studies in London and got back in contact with his childhood friend, Yati (Ellie Suriaty Omar). Both of them are keen in music and Harry wants to put up a band together with few of other friends doing what the western trends are doing. One girl band member is a scandalous nightclub singer, another is a gay keyboardist and their drummer is an Indian boy who sells roti nan and tandoori chicken for a living, yet he eats maggi everyday. All of them are trying to follow Harry's lead in following what other famous western DJs are doing. It is not working. They have to play at a rich Tan Sri's birthday bash doing traditional songs instead. But from there things started to change as the Tan Sri's son, Azri (Hani Mohsin Hanafi) caught the potential of Yati's syair (Malay poems) and it has brought them to an island in Terengganu where the band have to adapt to the local tunes. From there, the interactions and chemistry between them got more interesting.  ## TABOO Teck Tan stopped at nothing in showing the number of issues and the reality in racial and religious relationship in this country. Something that is not commonly shown in local movies back then. The Chinese gay keyboardist ties the bond with the Indian boy drummer, who was previously straight. The scandalous son of the Malay Tan Sri who is trying to be sexual with Yati in exchange of the band deal. The khalwat raid happened only in the cheap hotels but not in the Tan Sri's island resort. And the relationship between Harry and Yati which is separated by the wall of race and religion, where Harry was at one point ready to convert into Islam to be together to which Yati said "But you wouldnt be you anymore Harry." The potential of Harry's spinning records as a DJ and Yati's spinning gasing merging together to created a new fusion is wasted. Civilizations advanced in such a way yet we are settling for doing the same thing yet expecting different result. It is only the taboos people tend to see in this movie but most failed to see the nature of the country as a interesting melting pot of cultures. That we should celebrate our differences instead of building walls around each other. This movie was banned from the cinema by LPF at first but was re-released after 25 scenes being censored including the khalwat raid scene, Harry and Yati in the water together, Harry and Chantal sex scene and other sensitive dialogs and foul languages. But miraculously the VCD version has been approved for distribution with no censorship.
