Where did American football come from

Today my dad told me that if i figured out how the mayans played ball i could get a football. Well i figured it out. So it turns out they didnt use hands i guess football in spanish is soccer. So any ways they used any thing but their hands to get the ball through hoops that were really high, usually the first team to get the ball to the hoop won. The team that won was treated good and got to feast but the team that lost was treated poorly and sometimes were punished to death.
