Wildflower series ~ Wild Sweet-pea

I was pleasantly surprised to stumble on this little stunner today, I have never seen it before; there seems to be just one little patch of it growing high on a little rocky outcrop. Wild Sweet-pea, *Sphenostylis angustifolia* is another pre-rain flower with a large underground root system.

The older flowers look a little like pansies. When the seeds are ripe, this one is definitely going to be sowed in my garden.

I was wondering why they don't pose neatly for the camera with their petals spread out evenly but I read that this is a genetic feature of these plants and the explanation for it is that the twisting orientation of the flower petals prevents self-pollination of flowers. Apparently, right-twisting flowers can only be pollinated by left-twisting flowers from a genetically different plant and this keeps genetic variability of the species high and helps prevent disease.
