Witnesses are very essential to the functionality of the steemit ecosystem as they produce blocks to update the blockchain's database. These blocks are to be produced once every 3 seconds and contains validated signatures and several timestamped transactions including votes, transfers, feed publish and reward claims. 

To view some of the most recent blocks, visit https://steemdb.io/ and scroll down to **Recent Blockchain Activity**.

Witnesses therefore alternate in this block production and are rewarded for their services. Based on votes, a slot is allocated for each of our top 20 witnesses to produce a block with a randomly selected witness put on standby. This ensures a smooth block production system should any witness fail to produce a block in time.

Not only do witnesses produce blocks, some also help in developmental projects and creation of useful tools such as that of [Steem World](https://steemworld.org/) by @steemchiller, [Steemyy](https://steemyy.com/) by @justyy and [Steem Scan](https://steemscan.com/) by @futureshock. 

They also protect us against spams/hacking events and provide useful articles that cautions against various spamming/phishing accounts. They may also assist users to recover their accounts in the event of an account loss through similar circumstances.

This is the more reason why it is vital to vote for your favorite witnesses to keep them on top of the witness list.

To do so, you need to follow these steps. 

- Log into your steemit account and click on the top right corner.

- Click "**Vote for Witness**".

- An overview of the witness voting interface would then appear. You can also access this interface directly using https://steemitwallet.com/~witnesses and logging in with your posting key.

Each user has a maximum of 30 votes you can give. As such, each witness has provided some useful information about themselves as well as their plans/projects. You can read about them using the witness threads that corresponds to the witness of your interest.

This list display the top **100** witnesses of the steemit blockchain so you can scroll down and once you find the witness of your liking, click on the upward arrow next to the witness name.
