When someone asks why a recovery program works to help someone get their life back together, a better way of asking would be to say "How does it work?" Most would not realize that when they ask this question they are in fact answering their own question.

What do I mean by this statement? Well, when you ask HOW recovery works, you can break that down into H - Honesty, O - Open Mindedness, and W - Willingness. If you have these three attributes in your daily recovery program, you have a better than average chance of succeeding. 

Let's look at each of these in turn.

### Honesty
***
When it comes to recovery and learning to live a new way of life, enough cannot be said for the act of being honest in all of our thoughts and deeds. It is even written in the A.A. "Big Book" that the only people who seem to not be able to recover are those that are "Constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves and others." If you are unable to willingly look at yourself and why you behave the way you do, you will never be able to address the underlying issues that cause these behaviors. The first step in working a good recovery program is to be honest with yourself and others.

### Open Mindedness

Being willing to accept input and correction when someone brings it to you is also vitally important to working a healthy recovery program. There is a common saying in recovery to "Look at the message and not the messenger." It is very easy to discount and reject something that someone tells us just because we don't care for the person or the way they came to us with the information. The thing we really need to look at is, Does this apply to me and can I use it to be a better person? This is one of the toughest things to do in recovery.

### Willingness

Once we are honest with ourselves about our problems, and we become open minded about taking input, the last step is to be willing to do something about it. If we just decide that, Well yes that is my problem, but I am simply not going to do anything about it, then we are right back to square one in being stuck in our problems with no way out. If we are willing to work on our issues, it is pretty much guaranteed that they will begin to be solved. It may take some time, and it may be a difficult process, but it will happen.

### So remember, the question is not why does recovery work, but H.O.W.!
