Antabus by Seray Sahiner a book review.
Leyla is an unfortunate but invincible girl.
She is as strong as a tree that does not break despite the strong wind. A robust tree, well rooted but with branches that yearn for the sky.
Leyla comes from a tough family, with strict rules, especially with her.
Because she is a female and the females are born sinful and evil by nature.
Leyla was born in a rural village, with ancient and hard traditions like stones, as hard as she is.
She moved to Istanbul with her family , dreaming of it as a free, serene and grandiose city, but families are prisons everywhere even in a big city.
Fathers' chains do not change even if the place changes.
Leyla starts to work, the family does not sail in happy waters and even if she is a woman and she can't do that much, can she sew and why not learn to sew new colleagues and bosses better under the inquiring and hostile gaze?
Thus she passes from a master father to a chief master.
She's head still bent waiting for yet another punishment.
No questions Leyla, obey does not ask.
She knows that a just world is not within hers reach.
So better to keep quiet, to go straight, to obey.
There is a nice guy at the factory, Omer, everyone wants it and so do her.
When desire is born within oneself, it is almost ashamed of it, it abandons itself to puerile and dangerous fantasies about their future together, it is forbidden to have make up so she touch herself therefore i, she pinches her cheeks to give redness to the face. The two know each other better, born something of tender and the redness on the cheeks becomes tenderness and they falling in love.
Then that blush turns into shame, the head became a mess, a rape, taken and used as a dead, butchered meat.
An unspeakable shame that must be remedied. Leyla was an object and who is to blame?
Omer can't take care of it, he's a man, it's not his problem, he has other plans.

Leyla thus passes from a master father to a master boss to a master husband.
Remzi, quite easy going old men and he is looking for someone to torture and manipulate at will.
Who better than a young woman with so much shame in her heart?
Thus begins the ordeal of Leyla between violence and oppression, where the woman with stoicism accepts many things as if they were normal, without big reflections, without being shocked by violence, just like this, as one accepts a cold of season.
Your nose hurts but it's spring is normal.
It hurts everywhere but it's a man, it's normal.
And he beats her, rapes her, mistreats her, humiliates and drinks in front of her, drinks and drinks so much.
Leyla starts attending the hospital, a second home, where to invent small lies.
"I'm careless," she says as they heal her.
And here she meets Ulker, a woman who lives among the sick, making everyone a less serious life, even in Leyla.
Leyla, who now has children to protect and does not want others, but choosing for her uterus is unthinkable, she is a woman, it is not up to her to choose over her body.
Ulker so suggests her a little help and some drugs to make her husband drink less and maybe she will be more free and happy , the Antabus.

But care must be taken to use it with caution ...

Antabus can be dangerous as some men are....

As some society are...

>I finished this novel in one day.
One of the most raw and intense readings I've read lately.
A great little story of chauvinism and abuse, in a society divided between modernity and tradition, with people still tied to brutal violence and others completely emancipated from them.
A harsh complaint against a way of thinking and treating a woman as an object of exchange, an object that cannot be used or thinked.
A book that keeps you in suspense until the end and that creates an infinite rage towards people not far from many realities in the world.
Just thinking about it gives me the creeps.
To read, to re-read and not to forget.
Because the bad fathers still exist and the struggle for women's emancipation is not over yet.
