# Purple Flower • Colorful Photography

I captured a lonely purple flower in the park last week and decided to isolate it even more in a black & white world.

Below are the 2 layers I used to achieve the effect.

# Here's how I did it:

I opened the purple flower image (on the left) in photoshop.

I created a duplicate layer of the image (on the right).

I desaturated the top layer to make it black & white (on the right).

I used the erase tool with a soft round brush to erase the black & white layer of just the flower, leaves and stem (on the right) to reveal the purple and green beneath (on the left) resulting in the single image you see above.

I have never been able to do this kind of effects in Photoshop and I have used them for years, or rather I have not tried to do them. It looks good on photography and gives it style. One point that I noticed is the background, I like how out of focus it is.

The shallow depth of field is a result of the lens and the f-stop used.
