Cardano the number FOUR trading coin you never heard of - Input Output, Byron & Shelley, Haskell, Ouroboros and

Until today, most people hadn't heard of *Cardano*. It's just popped up as 4th largest volume trading on [worldcoinindex](www.worldcoinindex.com). Not surprisingly it's seemingly come from nowhere. it's ICO wasn't available to people in the West, most coin funds were raised in JAPAN. It's now being traded on *Bittrex* (only) with some ferocious activity and price is currently on $0.03 / £0.019 per coin. The coin is *Ada*. It's quite deep and can get a bit confusing for mere mortals, when you get under the hood and as it's a platform, there are many components, some of which are not yet up and running. In bootstrap mode, *Byron* is the **first gen** -*settlement layer*. *Shelley* will be added later ! (currently consenus is locked into private nodes) until the system gathers momentum / more coin holders are active in the system.

### What's Cardano ?
You know what a smart contract platform is, they're becoming *de rigueur* in this season's portfolio. Up until now, *Ethereum* had the world gripped with smart contract fever but as more developers realise the *potential* and importance of what smart contracts can offer from auto-insurance claims to distribution of dividends (aka the erc20 token profit share model) it's clear that the crypto world is developing faster than most people can keep up with. For me, that's part of the excitement. Cardano is actually a blockchain built from scratch using *haskell*. It's core is a *proof of stake* algorithm called *Ouboros* as opposed to Bitcoin and many other popular coins *proof of work*. Proof of stake reaches consenus by coinholder vote.. sound familiar ?

### But who are IOHK ?
*Charles Hoskinson* mean anything to you ? let's just say he's a friend of *Ned's* and just happens to be former CEO of Ethereum. *Nice resume Charles*. Along with Jeremy Wood, they were approached by a group of Japanese businessmen who collectively named (*Emurgo*) who wanted a smart contract platform which would meet the regulatory requirements rapidly being erected in the crypto-space. Needless to say IOHK were contracted to develop this with an Asian focused crowdsale. Because the tokens weren't available / sold in the USA it didn't fall foul of US security commission rules. A smart ticket ! The ICO raised $62m and with about 30m vouchers for *Ada*. Philip Wadler, principle designer of Haskell was brought in by IOHK to make something totally new which will be expandable. In the future, de-centralised apps will be written on the platform in legacy languages, Java, Javascript & C This seems like a very well thought out and well executed project. Good luck Ada. IOHK is a blockchain revolution advocate and their skills and ingenuity are being provided to academics, institutions and governments. They are no doubt very serious and large future players in a world which remains largely in the closet.
