MAXIMIZING YOUR EXPOSURE - IS 5 > 4 ? - CURRENT CONSIDERATIONS FOR TAGGING POSTS ON STEEMIT

## In order to maximize the effect and determine exactly what the current rules are, I am making a full post out of this.

Back in the day, tagging was out of control, so limits were put on the total number of tags a user could use. At that point it was 5, and no more were allowed. If you try to use more than 5 tags on a post, you are prevented from doing so, and unable to successfully submit it.

Recently, maybe since the last hardfork, it appears that using 5 tags may not be a good idea. It is not prohibited by the "Submit a Story" page since it still allows you to "use" them, but the posts that use 5 tags only seem to appear in the first tag used.

For a while, I have been using a maximum of 4 tags, as have many other steemians. Many though, seem to be unaware of this issue and continue to use 5 tags. Since I do not actually know the "real rules: about tags right now, I have been suggesting to some using to reduce their tag use by at least one, from 5 to 4.

Rather than continue to make comment after comment about this matter, I figured that I had better just lay this out there and expose everyone to this issue.

Proper tagging is an excellent way to maximize your exposure when posting on steemit, so many users will use as many as they are allowed. Those who have grown used to using five seem to still be using five in an attempt to have maximum exposure, but since only the first tag is showing up, they have actually been reducing their exposure.

## Here are a few questions that I would like to know the answers to:
* ### Has the number of tags we can used been reduced?
* ### Is there some sort of glitch in the system when users now try use five tags?
* ### If the maximum number of tags allowed is now 4, will the "Submit a Story" page be modified to prevent submissions attempting to use more than 4 tags?
* ### Is anything I have shared here inaccurate?

The 4 tag issue not there by design. It's a bug since the latest hard fork. I suppose it will be fixed in the next hard fork, but I'm not sure if a hard fork is necessary to fix this. Anyone?

It is a glitch in the blockchain code that was introduced during the last hardfork, but I heard from one of the developers that it will not require a new hardfork to fix it.

I think the limit ought to be raised a little. If I'm not mistaken, tags are one of the things that SEO bots/spiders look for in post content. If we want better SEO results, we shouldn't be restricting tag use to five (now four). 

Maybe seven would be a better number? Who doesn't like the number 7? I hear it's lucky.

There are 5 tags. The HF16 messed things up somehow. Use 4 until it's resolved, or else 5=1 for now. Things will go back to the way it was when it gets fixed hehe.

Hello my friend @papa-pepper. The problem it's not the quantity (5 or 4) but, the bug after hardfork. I unknowingly put during the hardfork 5 tags in my posts for a week. I was getting pennies, after putting 4 everything went back to normal. Big hug for you and Merry Christmas.

Papa, if you do a follow up post would you mention that the use of steem and steemit tags excessively and inappropriately might get a scary warning from steemcleaners? I've seen it happen, especially with newbies and it sometimes deters them from posting because they feel like mama slapped their hand out of the cookie jar.

strangely, I found that if you need 5 tags to expose your post, then you are choosing them bad. 2 tags should be "spot on", one tag should inventive, a the last one can be to "sell" or to be silly. If you do that, you will start to see the extra one like a bonus and not really use it.
