WILD ASPARAGUS? - NOT THIS TIME

This one goes out to @freedomtowrite from steemit. She's editing a book for me and we were talking the other day while I was foraging. She was curious about the Green Brier (*or Sawbrier*) that we were picking, so I figured I'd post a bit about it.

In the wilds of this area is a plant known as Green Brier. Those who know it well understand that it is pretty much wild **barbed wire**. While it can be quite a pain (*literally*) as it gets more mature, the young sprouts are tender and edible!

Very early on they even look rather similar to Asparagus, and have a similar crunch. Around here, we enjoy them either raw or cooked, while the goats and sheep only eat them raw. ;-)

I chopped up a skillet-full the other day, and sauteed them in butter. Wanted some additional flavoring, I thought back to my previous woodland adventures foraging in the wild.

This is some frozen wild garlic or leek that we found, and I made a gallon freezer bag full of it just for moments like this. It's wild, healthy, and my favorite price: **free!**

We added in some browned ground beef to bulk it up and add some meat, and soon we were ready for dinner. We've also eaten them with wild meat, like fish, but this time we used "store-bought" meat.

Served over a little bit of white rice, it was a great meal. With fresh, free greens from the wild, it's a great way to get a filling meal and teach the family more about the world around us. Enjoy your weekend folks!

I spent three years attending plant walks with a gentleman who lives about 45 minutes east of me, and he turned me into greenbriar tips, which I love raw. 

I haven't cooked them as yet, mostly because I've never found them in that kind of quantity, but I have no doubt they'd be great. 

Gotta love free foraged food! ;-)
