Can the Data Tell us Why Ned Undelegated so much Steem Power? Steemit Business Intelligence

<p>As fast as it was given it was taken back. &nbsp;That’s right, Ned has undelegated nearly all the Steem Power that he delegate in August.</p>
<p>The lucky steemains @htliao, @linuslee0216, @nicolemoker, @surpassinggoogle, @sweetsssj @tumutanzi and @ramengirl &nbsp;&nbsp;between them received million worth of Steem vests power, which lasted from the 8th August until yesterday</p>
<p>Then, for some reason @ned undelegated all of the Steem Power Except that to @surpassinggoogle.</p>
<p>When the delegation happened, I analysed the voting habits of these steemains before and after receiving the extra power and the findings were very interesting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So why was the delegation removed? Being the data person, I decided to see if the data could shed some light on the situation.</p>
<p>Looking at each of these Steemains I have taken the data from Steemsql held by &nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://steemit.com/@arcange">@arcange</a>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>High Level Overview – Votes</h2>
<p>For this analysis I have taken the votes made during the period of delegation. &nbsp;The 100% vote worth was taken as the vote worth the day the delegation was made.</p>

<p>Based on these values $457K was rewarded in votes from these steemains, with an average of over 3.9K votes per day. &nbsp;Well ahead with the number of votes per day is @surpassinggoogle, voting X6 more per day than @nicolemoker. &nbsp;We can also see that @surpassinggoogle has an average voting weight of below 4%. &nbsp;Voting over 1300 times a day, this does not surprise me. &nbsp;</p>
<p>In terms of pay-outs, in total @sweetsssj has paid out the most in rewards.</p>

<p>The pie chart above shows a break down per voter of unique authors voted for. @surprassinggoogle is really spreading the joy reaching over 2925 different authors, or 43% of all the authors voted for with this extra delegated power.</p>
<p>A lot of authors got votes over the 77 days of delegation. &nbsp;The tables below shows the authors rewarded with the most $ with this delegated power</p>

<p>&nbsp;We can see from these tables that a number of authors did rather well from this power. &nbsp;Each voter, except @surpassinggoogle has paid out over $1k to a few authors. &nbsp;In fact the table below shows the % of each voter pay-outs that went to their 10 favourite authors.</p>

<p>Combining all of this data into one chart, it is easy to see who has gained the most on a cumulative basis from this delegation. &nbsp;I am not surprised to see that @surpassinggoogle has not made it to this list.</p>

<p>Take a look at the network chart below. &nbsp;There seems to be 3 clusters. @surpassinggoogle and the people he has voted for, @ramengirl and her votes and then the others that received delegation seem to very much share a lot of authors that have received votes.</p>

<h2>Transfer Data</h2>
<p>Along with voting, I have also taken data on transfers for 2017. &nbsp;I wanted to see if there was a change in trend in the volume and value of transfers.</p>
<p>Looking at the image below, the bar chart on the left shows the number of transfers to each of these steemains. There is a rapid growth in the number of transactions to @sweetsssj and @htliao from August. On the right the bar chart shows the value of the transactions received, and we can see that @tumutanti received considerable more in September than ever before.</p>

<p>To put this in a little more perspectives the table below shows a clear representation of these transfers sorted by the total received, from who is was received and how many transactions made up the total.</p>

<p>I also decided to have a dig through the memos. &nbsp;A considerable volume of transactions to both @sweetsssj and @htliao contain links to post in the memo with nothing else.</p>
<p>Reading the top memo on the table below, it very quickly because clear that @htliao was selling votes</p>

<p>However there were no memos of the same context for @sweetsssj so my next step was to compare the links given in the memo to votes given by @sweetsssj. &nbsp;The table on the right shows transfers to @sweetsssj, who it was from, the amount sent and the link in the memo. &nbsp;The table on the right shows votes given to authors, the value of the vote and the link of the post voted on.</p>
<p>The data clearly shows @sweetsssj was also selling votes.</p>

<p>So a quick check of the data for delegation and I found that only one of the steemains that received this delegated power, also delegated out power</p>

<p>Finally I wanted to have a quick look at rewards claimed by each of these steemain, both author rewards and curator rewards</p>

Thank yo uPaula for always being there to pull the data so that we don't have to come up with theories.  The data gives a very clear picture of what is going on, some will dispute the selling votes claim, but the proof is in the pudding. 

So the next question is, will @ned find other worthy Steemians like @surpassinggoogle to give delegations to?  Or was this a one time experiment whose day is done?

Someone suggested in another post that he delegate to @curie.  I think efforts like Curie that are out and manually curating are a great place to look, and would endorse that sort of delegation whole heartedly, along with other curation teams like @OCD, @acidyo, and @buildawhale.  People and groups with a proven track record of good curation and transparancy in what they are doing.

I hope someone gets him to talk about these things at Steemfest!

absolutely! Steem needs to invest in developing a presence in potential growth markets. And finding the right people to delegate to can help that. 

the problem is, guys and gals like Terry don't grow on trees. Finding people who will use thr delegation for the community and not out of self interest is the hard part.

Thank yo uPaula for always being there to pull the data so that we don't have to come up with theories.  The data gives a very clear picture of what is going on, some will dispute the selling votes claim, but the proof is in the pudding. 

So the next question is, will @ned find other worthy Steemians like @surpassinggoogle to give delegations to?  Or was this a one time experiment whose day is done?

Someone suggested in another post that he delegate to @curie.  I think efforts like Curie that are out and manually curating are a great place to look, and would endorse that sort of delegation whole heartedly, along with other curation teams like @OCD, @acidyo, and @buildawhale.  People and groups with a proven track record of good curation and transparancy in what they are doing.

I hope someone gets him to talk about these things at Steemfest!

Great data ,as always @paulag    Honestly, I would love to see @ned delegate to the largest Steemit help community there is, Minnow support project. MSP has 5000 members and does alot to help minnows on Steemit, and a delegation from someone that has that kind of SP could help tremendously, and MSP has its own anti abuse team.  

Of course I am bias, as I am one of the community leaders.  But I am also being honest... MSP needs help from large delegators like @ned and that SP could goto helping ALOT of minnows that desperately need it

I mean how to make truely good content more reachable and rewarded. Banning them? I think it's not easily possible as there may be no centralized organizer of steemit because of its decentralized nature. And it may not a solution. Hmmm

I'm glad that some of the people doing questionable things with their delegation are being called out with what the data shows. Selling votes when the CEO delegated you the power is a bit questionable to me. On the other hand, it's awesome to see that the delegated Steem Power given to @surpassinggoogle was not taken back, as he is always around spreading the love and just making this place better each day. The amount of lives touched by him alone is tremendous.

Thanks for putting out this article for everyone to get an idea of what is going on thru the numbers, while not adding any personal opinions and really just letting the numbers do the talking. I will be sure to resteem to my followers :)

Paula, what a magnificent piece of data mining and analysis! That's part of the beauty of the blockchain-- it's transparent and you can find all this stuff IF you know where to look, and how to retrieve the relevant data.

I was gonna upvote but some of your conclusions should be more careful. Like @justyy's SP delegation initiative is to help cn minnows and @htliao supports him by 500SP is no dig deal (don't forget they all have their *own* SP!) or some may consider it a good thing to do so. 

One more thing, I know from one of the curators that Ned specifically asked him to curate posts ***under*** the cn tag, so it is very normal that their votes do not span across more authors. If you judge their votes by this criteria, it might be misleading and unfair. 

Data transparency is the best thing ever, but your analysis and conclusion might be influential, I hope that you can be more careful with that (**it's other Steemians' reputation on the line!**). Don't come to quick conclusions, let the data speaks for itself and let everyone have their own opinion. Although, Ned, the SP owner, should be the ultimate judge of that.

For the record, I have never ever asked or even hinted these curators to upvote my posts, ever.

Still, I really like your data and thinking. Just hope you can be more careful.

I shouldn't have to be careful - isn't steemit about freedom of speech? and if it is on the block chain then is is not a secret.  Why should I be careful saying it as it is?  I am sick of pussy footing around Steemit in case I piss people off.  There is so much in the data that is 'Obvious' if people would only open their eyes. But say it and I will be downvoted. @paulag I think your reply to @deanliu is a bit harsh,  considering she is just reminding you that data needs to be interpreted in context. And it is not about freedom of speech.  It's about being careful about all the data that you gather and whether there are factors you have not considered before making conclusions that put others on the line.  I think by now there have been a lot of voices pointing out that for example @justyy using the said transfers to help minnows,  or evidence that @htliao has ignored rather than sell vote to steemians who tried to buy him. However,  these argument and evidence would have been drowned out by the preposition that this article has presented - people already think everyone who was mentioned in the article is guilty.  I am not here to say it has or has not happened,  but as a person in real life who suffers a lot from data being interpreted out of context,  I just want to say be careful,  because data speaks the truth,  but when you don't have all the data,  ie the rest of the context,  seemingly correct conclusions can be wrong.

Hmm, didn't knew @htliao was also selling votes. I could have bought some. Even though sweetsssj was also selling votes, but I guess it was really helping many minnows. She was certainly giving a good ROI. I guess that was also a kind of help. 

As for Ned undelegating his SP, I think it was more of a experiment. Maybe now he will delegate it to some other people with different community. I don't think it has anything to do with their use of the delegated SP. Otherwise he wouldn't have undelegated the SP from 6 at the same time.

Thank God the ~~bad eggs~~ are being brought to justice. I'm glad he could also see the works of @surpassinggoole. All I pray for Terry is Good health, long life and happiness. Even with his daily life he makes out time to help **everyone** I am so happy he will continue this act of selflessness.

I can imagine the amount of time and stress it takes you to gather all the data for this awesome post. This is a very clear representation of the major actors involved in the issue at hand.

Going through this, my faith in the person of @surpassinggoogle has just been made very stronger. He is a rare gem who distinguishes himself in almost all facets of his activities, a huge inspiration to upcoming Steemians. It is not a surprise therefore that he scaled through @ned audit untainted.

I must appreciate the person of @ned for being just in his judgement. Not every person would have had the gut to do what he did. It goes  a long way to tell of his love for steem blockchain because if what was going on was not checked, it would have negatively  affected a lot of Steemian s to the detriment of Steemit itself.

In lending my voice for call made by @sweetestglo-eu for @maryfavour to me considered for delegation, I strongly support it. I have followed the activities of @maryfavour for sometime now and I can attest to the fact that she holds steemit with reverence and love. Activities of @redfishpillar comes to mind in this regard. If such relegation is given to her, she would handle it just the way @surpassinggoogle is handling his.

Yes, what they call this is selflessness. When you have the mind of the majority at heart. There are a lot of persons like @surpassinggoole on steemit just the way there are much more of the other category we have here. Our perceptions of life cannot be thesame yeah.
Infact, one thing that caught my attention at a time was the curation pattern that @surpassing google engages in. He is one I can refer to as a total curator in which case he doesn't only vote for a post but also extends upvotes to comments made under the post. Before I knew @surpassinggoogle does this, it was at @infovore that I used to know that curates in that pattern but Terry's went far more... Such things as this encourage a more interactive steemit and reduces the bot factor in it.
Who doesn't know about the steemit untallented contest? I bet that's a valuable way of making impact and utilizing a power and priviledge one has.

Hi @paulag, thanks for your analysis. There is no problem at all you point out **the facts**, but the issue is **you are not pointing out all the facts**, which may mislead people in some way. For example, the SP delegated to @justyy by @htliao is used to help minnows in cn Community. Moreover, 500 SP is negligible for @htliao, compared to the total amount delegated to him by @ned, not to say that he has his own SP as well before this delegation. **It will be more comprehensive if you dip deeper and consider all the related facts** as well. Just a piece of advice for you.

Wow. Would someone just take a look at all that Data.. Stats don't lie. And oftentimes I would wonder if there were supports in place to help newbies. Obviously there is, and one man has done his job so well. I've always seen @surpassinggoogle as a man who's out to help others selflessly. Who despite his busy routine is there to respond to even DMs on discord. That's humility, that's what I call a leader...

I'd also like to thank you @paulag for laying everything bare. Obviously, everyone is working, but just few have been very dedicated to keeping the promises made to uplift the little guys out there. You want to speak with data. Therefore, I believe you need to make sure your data are correct.

I think @nationalpark points out a very intersting thing. Steemit is not a full time job even for those who was delegaged huge amount of SP by @ned. Check out this post, and you will know how hard @tumutanzi was working to upvote. https://steemit.com/cn/@justyy/r-tutorial-knowing-when-a-steem-whale-vote-r-steem. We are humans and not bots. You cannot expect human to work 24/7. I believe what @ned needs are human instead of bots.  Again, it's better for you to point out **all the facts**. I don't think anyone is really **reading** these posts if they upvote too much a day. From what I saw in cn community, @tumutanzi set a very good example for minnows regarding creating good posts. FYI, I did not benefit a lot from those delegated SP and I do not know any of them in person.

Yes, I totally understand it's average. That's what I am talking about: on average he needs 22 hours to vote if he votes once per minutes, **if** @paulag's data are correct.
My conclusion is: her data are not correct. I only checked the data in the first chart and it's not correct. It makes me suspect the whole report.
Before I can discuss other issues with her, she need to make sure she shows correct data.

Looking more carefully at the data this time:

I took a look at the table vs the line chart in that image, and they can't be referencing the same data or the same time span. For example, in the chart @surpassinggoogle has a peak close to 700, yet in the table the average for @surpassinggoogle is 1327. I don't think that is mathematically possible. Based on the line chart, the average for @surpassinggoogle would have to be less than 700...

@paulag, thanks for taking your time doing all this data.  Wow, data is king.  But we also need to know how to read them. Sounds like a judgment day on Steemit. I don't understand why out of 7 people, @ned chose 6 Asians, and 5 of them are chinese from the cn group. Or maybe there are other groups he delegated we are totally unaware of.   But I am chinese, and I came in here in the middle of August, totally new, and not invited by any of these people as I didn't even know them.  Because I am chinese, and naturally I would be interested in this group and got to know them in the past few weeks.  Tomorrow, I will write a post to share with you exactly what happened as a new Steemian coming in after these SP delegation (which I was totally unaware of) so people can also hear it from our experiences in this process.  How long did it take you to research all this data and put this post together?  A lot of hard work. Thank you.

there is a full days work gone into this analysis.  I did look at things when the delegation was made to see why ned chose these people.  My only answer was the good work and reach the are getting for steemit.  I still believe these people did good work.   Look at the size of the rewards they spread.  That is awesome

Thanks for taking the time to put them together.  I try to understand the graphs and data too.  I slept on this (but really could not sleep last night) and put in my experience with these 7 people when I came in (August 16th) which I was totally unaware of all these things until you posted.  I can only contribute from my experience with this group in the last few weeks.

This was, as usual, a thorough analysis. But it doesn't really come to any conclusions about why the power got undelegated. Did @ned realize he'd made a mistake? Was this always intended to be a temporary measure or some kind of experiment? It feels like this is creating more questions than answers, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

@paulag, this data sends chill down my throat. 
I'm not surprised that @ned took such decision. 
Though I'm not an expert in data analysis but from the tables, chats given above which the source prove it, shows clearly misuse of power by some SP mafias.
@surpassinggoogle takes it all. He is a man of people. An instance is his recent ***untalented contest*** he runs. His intention behind the contest is to create a room of opportunity and fair participation for the less privileged on steemit (newbies or untalented ones) . He ensures everyone that participated either through entry or a mere comment gets something to encourage him or her remain in the system. What  a humanitarian?

Working with the data above undoubtedly justifies @ned's action. 

Steemians like @maryfavour, @eurogee, @ehiboss, @gbenga others are such people I think should be saddled with such delegation. Why?  You may want to make a quick search or gather data on these people, you would think they're replicas of @surpassinggoogle.

@paulag what I can said is this is a very good example of selective presentation of data to frame people. Nice work!
First of all, I have to declare my interests, I am one of the guy who @htliao, @nicolemoker and @linuslee0216 often voted, this was because we are from Hong Kong and we joined Steemit at almost the same time due to introduction of same person.
I would like to say you've dig out a lot of data which is the value of this post. However, it is clear to me that your conclusion had been deliberately set to make other people think to the direction you would like to, which is a very commonly used technique in business world to "achieve your goal by just selectively present data favour your conclusion". Again, this was nicely done and I believe many people who didn't care about the turth would very much like to see your conclusion.
Let's see that "Fact" that you use to conclude @htliao was selling votes, it was messages from @aafrin sent to @htliao asking for upvotes, sounds good proof! But let's see what @aafrin did:

Our fellow steemian like to send lots of messages to others who got plenty of SP for upvote. So I guess it is very natural for @aafrin to do the same thing to @htliao.
Guess what? I think he didn't get anything he needed in return that's why for later 18 days, no one went to @htliao for upvote business! What a failure @htliao was in the selling votes business!!!!! Maybe @ned undelegated his SP because @htliao could not sell votes well?

Let me show you all something else, there was another Steemian did the same thing by sending 1SBD to @htliao and ask for vote, and @htliao didn't do anything!!!!

What a bad businessman @htliao was if he was selling vote! I think you did the right thing by point out @htliao was not doing good in selling vote! No wonder @ned took the SP back!
I think @ned likes people who know how to use bot to vote and for those who really care about contents by looking into the posts before they votes, which made them cannot votes over thousands time per day, @ned thought them are not effective and took the SP back! That's the concluson I draw from your data. Thanks for the data!

As a newer Steemian, I love seeing the beauty and power of the blockchain at work to shed light on the truth. You've helped me get a better understanding of the potential rationale behind @ned's potential reasons for withdrawing his generous gift to all except one. I'm glad that any potential misallocation or inefficient use of such resources won't be able to continue on this scale now, while new benefactors with this power can now hopefully have a more positive impact.

What stands out in your data is the concentration of rewards given to some heavily preferred authors, and the relative distribution you've laid out. Do you think there could be anything more to that story where some numbers seem to pop a bit too much? I feel that where there's smoke, there's fire.

What I love about @surpassinggoogle's award distribution is that they made sure someone who TRULY needs Steemit's help for life saving medication, @cryptopie, was very highly ranked. While it's a microcosmic stat to highlight, it just shows me something, as this ubiquitous and verified blogger in need is not on anyone else's list. Whether other recipients listed are of similar need or not, I do not know at all, but I like seeing this diamond in the data.

Aside from seeing heavy self-awarding figures, and seeing names on the top of upvote lists on their own posts for quite some time, seeing something done about the power that helped this indirectly gives me a much better feeling about the community self-regulating itself. I've learned that it simply takes some time for that to happen, but perhaps checkpoint analysis can be done on any future rounds of delegations to catch vote selling, pocket padding, and/or other potential questionable activity earlier.

@paulag: while I'd think that you're more concerned with the exposure and recognition for your diligent work, it's a shame that this received a such a small payout so far for the value you brought to the table. You got the views, vote volume, comments, and support, but currently 2-3 times less what a networked veteran quickly gets from their instantly trending post with a linked picture and two blurbs assembled in a few minutes. It doesn't add up!

Thanks for your effort, passionate dialogue to help your readers assume less and make a better-informed opinion on the matter.

Beside my tiny minnow upvote, you'll have a new follower that will be looking forward to more of your work, as well as eager to look more into your #bisteemit team.

Thanks for the great work! As the amount of users and data grows on the Steem blockchain, your posts and analysis have become more fascinating to read. I am a big fan of the level of transparency that is possible here, what we need is more people to point out the data out there and let people make up their own mind about it. I have been reading many people's posts speculating about why ned undelegated but no one used data to clarify our understanding of the decision as much as you have done here.

I don't think we can question @surpassinggoogle's efforts in making this a better community (at least from the comments). But the only person that can comment on the rationale of his action is of course @ned himself, so we shouldn't speculate what the data means, but recognize that it is there and can help us form questions to investigate further. 

We also can't question @paulag's efforts in bringing the data that is available in the blockchain to the rest of the community on #bisteemit, and everyone's contribution to this post in the comments, so I hope there can be more posts and discussions like this one.

@ramengirl Has consistently been voting on her own post during the last day.

This was to attract more votes with a reasonably low reward while still self-rewarding at full strength around the end.

This is not how SP is intended to be used, it's intended to be used to give exposure to your post and let the market be the judge of the outcome.

BTW: I'm really not a fan of "superficial Japanese feel good selfies" posts.

I really appreciate your data analysis. I was also wondering why ned took back the SP all of a sudden with no explanation. Gossip is fun, but one can never be careful enough if the gossip affects others' reputation. Data can prove as well as data can cheat. I guess there must be something wrong either with your data or with the way you presented your data. It would be much helpful if your data analysis is reproducible. Would be appreciated if you could kindly share your excel sheets.

Thank you for the analysis. I liked your previous analysis reports which show lots of insight information.

It seems some of your calculation results are WRONG. 

### As far as I know, I usually upvoted 100 times daily during the delegation period. Each day I had 20% voting power and thus 1000% voting weight, so on average 10% voting weight for each upvote.

As for some conclusions you made, I do not want to comments given your calculation is not that right.

It sweets my mind that this people were brought to justice. If not , we will continue to walk in the darkness without a fire to lighten our burden here.

Hmmm, May God bless Terry and make him stronger than before. @surpassinggoogle  has been a helping hand towards the development of this community while he didn't limit his hands to those around him only.
He has being so much helpful to both minnows and redfishes just exactly like @maryfavour of @redfishpillar and I'm pretty good that he was considered to be the left out of others.

I check sweetssj transaction and she was just voting terrible posts ( like really really terrible posts)  that transfer the big money which I think was so disappointing . Of course they won't admit they are selling , and ppl are doing themselves.. . Also most of the CN steemians  vote their own ppl, and never to the random people... Zzzzzzz
