나쁜 교회는 성령의 능력이 없는 교회이다

A Bad Church is the One without the Power of the Spirit.

제가 섬기는 영성학교는 성령이 내주하는 기도를 훈련하는 곳이죠.

CSA, the church I serve, is a place that trains people to pray for Holy Spirit’s indwelling.

 

 그러나 대부분의 우리네 교인들은 이런 기도에 관심이 없습니다. 1분짜리 영접기도를 하면 성령이 안에 들어오셨다고 믿고 있기 때문이에요. 

Most Christians are not interested in this prayer because they believe the Holy Spirit is already within them

 

그래서 무슨 해괴망측한 소리냐는 반응이 많죠. 

So they look at me weird when they hear my claims.

 

그러나 저는 덧붙여서, 어떤 정신질환이나 고질병을 비롯해서 세상에서 해결할 수 없는 삶의 문제가 있는 사람들에게, 이 기도를 훈련하면 죄다 해결 받을 수 있다고 큰소리를 떵떵 쳤습니다. 

But my claims didn’t end there; I also said I can help resolve any issues in life if they pray according to what I teach.

 

그래서 각종 정신질환이나 고질병에서 고통 받는 이들이 한 가닥 희망을 안고 영성학교에 찾아와서 기도훈련에 대해 코칭을 받거나 가까이서 지켜보았어요. 

Many people who suffered from chronic illnesses and mental disorders came to get help.

 

그러나 두어 시간도 안 되어서 후다닥 돌아간 이들중에서, 인터넷에 영성학교에서 본 기도훈련에 대한 악의적인 참관기를 올리는 이들도 더러 있습니다. 

But many gave up; some left nasty remarks after training for a couple of hours.

 

그들의 말은 제가 배를 쥐어짜는 기이한 기도를 가르치면서 불쌍한 이들을 미혹시킨다고 적었습니다. 

They said I lure people with strange praying posture.

 

그랬더니 그 글 뒤에 어떤 이가 댓글을 달았습니다. 

Then someone else commented.

 

요즘 그러한 불건전한 신비주의자들이 창궐하며 극단적인 기도를 하고 있다고 비난을 해댔죠. 

He/she said tons of mystics (like me) pray in strange positions.

 

아니, 기도하는 것을 곁에서 구경만하고 돌아가서 사람들을 미혹시킨다고 비난을 하는 이들이나, 영성학교에 대해 알지도 못하면서 불건전한 신비주의, 극단적인 기도를 운운하는 이들을 바라보면서 마음이 어두워졌습니다. 

I felt helpless after seeing all these people slandering CSA after trying for a couple of hours or so.

 

우리나라의 어느 교회에서 기도훈련을 시키는 곳이 있으며, 기도훈련을 해서 정신질환이나 고질병이 치유되고, 삶의 지난한 문제가 기적처럼 해결될 수 있다고 목청을 높이는 교회가 어디 있습니까?

 I mean, who else claims to help resolve people’s issues through prayer?

 

 

 

 

 

저는 젊은 시절에 열정적으로 신앙생활을 하면서 사업실패자와 인생실패자가 되었습니다.

I was a total failure, in business as well as life, after doing churchwork diligently.

 

제가 다니던 교회의 담임목사는, 믿고 기도하는 것마다 응답이 내려올 것을 철썩 같이 믿으라고 소리를 질러댔습니다. 

The pastor of the church I attended yelled out loud that the prayers will all be answered--only if I believe they will.

 

그리고는 예배 때마다 교인들은 뜨거운 목소리로 통성기도를 하였고, 매일 저녁마다 기도회를 만들어서 사람들이 기도하러 몰려들었지요. 

People prayed out loud during the prayer time;  prayer meetings were created.

 

그래서 그 교회는 제가 처음 그 교회에 다닐 때는 자그마한 교회였는데, 10년이 지나서 그 교회를 나올 때는 만 명이 넘는 대형교회가 되었습니다. 

When I first attended, the church was very small; it became a huge place over the course of 10 years.

 

그러나 그게 믿음이라고 착각한 필자는, 엄청난 대출을 얻어서 사업을 시작해서 시쳇말로 쫄딱 망했습니다. 

And I thought that was the result of people’s faith; so I took out a huge loan to start a business and lost’em all.

 

제가 그 교회를 나온 뒤에 친하게 지냈던 교우들의 삶도 저와 별반 차이가 없었죠. 

And my fellow churchgoers at that church weren’t too far from where I stood.

 

대부분의 교인들이 그 교회를 나왔으며, 무능하고 무기력한 믿음으로 고단하고 팍팍하게 살고 있다는 후문이 있습니다. 

I heard, later, that most people left the church and suffered from life’s issues.

 

그러나 아이러니하게도 그 교회는 대형교회로 성장하였고, 담임목사는 한기총 총회장을 지내기도 하였으니 기이한 일이죠. 

Ironically, the church still expanded; the pastor there became the president of the Korean Christian Organization. Funny, isn’t it?

 

그러나 지금은 그렇게 뜨겁게 기도하는 교회도 보기 힘듭니다. 

But it’s hard to find a church that prays passionately.

 

지금의 대형교회로 성장한 대부분의 교회들이 7,80년대의 경제부흥기에 폭발적인 교회성장을 이룬 교회들이 허다하죠. 

Many large churches gathered their wealth through the country’s economic growth in the 70s and 80s.

 

그 때는 그게 하나님의 역사이고 성령의 능력이라고 소리를 질러댔지만, 지금 그 시절을 생각하면 보이스 피싱이나 불법적인 다단계사업에 넘어가 재산을 털린 이들과 다름이 없다는 생각에 입안이 씁쓸합니다. 

Back then, everyone thought the growth is the sign of the Spirit; but now, I feel like we were all hoodwinked, as sad as it sounds.

 

그러나 아무도 그런 교회가 나쁜 교회라고 생각하지 않아요.

 But no one considers that kind of church as “bad.”

 

 

 

 

 

나쁜 교회는 무능하고 무기력한 교회입니다. 

A bad church is the one that is powerless and energyless.

 

성경적인 기도를 가르치지 않으며 성령의 능력도 나타나지 않는 교회입니다.

It’s the one that does not teach people to pray biblically--it’s the one without the signs of the Spirit.

 

 종교적인 예배의식에 참석을 종용하고 십일조와 과도한 헌금을 강요하며 각종 희생적인 신앙행위를 반복하라고 닦달하는 교회입니다. 

It’s the one that requires your money and time.

 

그 교회에서 시키는 대로 열정적으로 신앙생활을 하고 예배를 드려도 사는 게 고단하고 팍팍할 뿐이지요. 

The problem is that you won’t really have a better life, even after all that work.

 

말하자면 기도의 응답이나 성령의 능력도 없는 종교적인 교인을 양산하는 교회일 뿐입니다. 그런 교회가 나쁜 교회가 아닙니까?

In other words, it is a church without power that only creates religionists. Shouldn’t that be considered a bad church?

 

 고가의 스마트 폰이 일찍 고장이 나거나, 고급 음식점의 음식이 맛이 없다면, 당신은 분노를 터뜨리면서 환불을 요청하지 않나요? 

Wouldn't you be upset and ask for a refund if your newly bought smartphone malfunctions?

 

그리고는 다시는 그 회사의 제품을 사지 않겠다고 다짐을 하겠죠. 

You’d probably promise yourself you won’t buy from that brand ever again.

 

그런데 막대한 시간과 엄청난 돈 그리고 에너지를 쏟아 부은 신앙생활이 아무런 열매가 없는데도, 어째서 여러분은 문제 삼지 않고 조용히 구경만 하고 있습니까? 

But how come you do nothing, even when nothing happens to your life after all the money and time spent in church?

 

진짜 재앙은 이 땅에서가 아닙니다. 

The real disasters don’t happen here on earth.

 

심판대 앞에서 가짜 신앙을 진짜로 속았다는 것을 알았다면 경악스럽지 않겠습니까?

 You need to worry about the moment when you stand in front of God--when you find out whether your faith is true or not.

 

 

 

 

 

다시 처음으로 돌아가서, 필자를 맹비난하는 사람들을 생각해봅시다. 

Let’s go back to the beginning, about the people leaving negative remarks.

 

우리네 교회에서 시행하는 기도의 방식은 새벽기도회에 나가서 자신의 소원하는 내용을 1,20분 열거하는 방식이죠. 

The prayer format people are used to consists of attending the early morning service and reciting what they want for 10-20 minutes.

 

또한 교회에서 정한 기도회에 참석해서 교회에서 원하는 내용을 통성으로 기도하거나, 자신들이 원하는 내용을 간구하는 겁니다.

And people pray out loud about what church needs as well as what they need.

 

 그러나 이런 기도방식이 성경에 있나요? 성경에서 요구하는 기도는, 전심으로 쉬지 않고 항상 깨어서 기도하는 겁니다. 

But is there such thing mentioned in the Bible? What the Bible commands us to do is to pray continually.

 

그리고 기도하는 내용도 자신의 유익을 구하는 것이 아니라 하나님의 나라와 그의 의를 구하는 것이에요. 

And you must pray about God’s will, not your own.

 

영성학교에서는 성경대로 기도를 훈련시키고 있습니다.

CSA keeps the biblical way of praying.

 

 하루 종일 쉬지 않고 하나님이 통치하시고 다스리시는 하나님의 나라를 구하며 성령의 내주를 간구하는 기도이죠.

The prayer must ask for God’s will, to expand His kingdom, and to ask for Holy Spirit’s indwelling.

 

그리고 기도의 태도도 전심으로 기도하는 것을 구체적으로 가르치고 있습니다. 

And the prayer has to be done with all your heart and soul.

 

야곱이 얍복강에서 천사와 씨름하며 애를 써서 기도한 모습과, 예수님이 겟세마네 동산에서 기도할 때 피가 땀방울에 섞여서 흘러내릴 정도로 용을 쓰며 기도하죠다. 

This is seen in Jacob when he wrestles with an angel by River Jabbok and in Jesus when his blood came down with his sweat.

 

그래서 제가 전심으로 기도하려면 온몸에 힘을 주고, 특히 힘의 중심이 되는 아랫배에 힘을 주어 기도하라고 가르치는 것이 불건전한 신비주의자들의 기도이고 극단적인 기도입니까?

 In order to focus better, I urge people to flex their muscles, especially in the lower abs; how is this unbiblical and strange?

 

 

 

 

 

제가 영성학교를 시작한지 4년 반이 흘렀으며, 천명이 넘는 사람들이 찾아왔고 수백명이 넘는 사람들이 이 기도훈련을 시작했습니다. 

It’s been 4 and a half years since CSA’s opening; many people visited, hundreds of people joined the prayer training.

 

그동안 귀신이 쫓겨나가고 정신질환과 고질병이 치유되며, 갖가지 이적과 기적이 나타나서 삶과 영혼이 회복되었습니다. 

And they had their illnesses healed and restored their peaceful life.

 

제 기도훈련이 불건전한 신비주의자이거나 혹세무민하는 이단교회라면, 필자가 훈련하는 기도가 비성경적인지 혹은 성령의 능력이 나타나는 지로 확인해야 하지 않겠습니까? 

If people believe I’m a mystic or a cult leader, shouldn’t they check to see if I show all these signs of the Spirit?

 

그러나 배를 쥐어짜는 기도모습이 비성경적이고, 기도로 귀신을 쫓아내고 고질병을 치유하는 게 불건전한 신비주의자들이라고요? 

But they say flexing abs when praying is unbiblical; they say praying to get rid of illnesses and demons is unbiblical.

 

그렇다면 예수님과 사도들이 그런 무리라고 고발해야 하지 않겠습니까? 

Then, shouldn’t you consider Jesus and his followers unbiblical, too?

 

대부분의 교회에서는 성경대로 기도하지 않고 기도훈련도 하지 않지요. 

Most churches don’t pray; they don’t train to pray, either.

 

물론 성령의 능력도 없고 기적도 나타나지 않습니다. 그게 나쁜 교회가 아닐까요? 

Of course, there is no sign of the Spirit or miracles anywhere. Shouldn't that be considered a bad church?

 

자신들의 교회가 정통적이고 개혁적이며 성경적인 교회라고 주장하지만, 정작 성령의 능력이 나타나지도 않고 하나님을 만나는 기도훈련도 하지 않은 교회가 나쁜 교회가 아닙니까? 

People say their church is biblical. But aren’t they unbiblical if they don’t train people to pray for the signs of the Spirit?

 

그런 교회가 불쌍한 사람을 미혹시켜서 영적 잠을 자게 하여 지옥으로 빠지게 하는 미혹의 영에 속고 있는 교회일 겁니다.

This is the church that puts Christians into a deep stupor; this is the church that is fooled by spirits of falsehood.
