What I learnt this week 7 (Part 1): Bacteria for Ultrasound Imaging, Sensors for Plants, Fish linked to higher IQ...
Hello,

I welcome you all to the week 7 of this challenge, I am happy this week's part came only a day later than the actual time although this wasn't pre-planned but it's at least better than the usual 2-days lapse and that's an improvement.

I hope you like this week's package. So, let's unravel it.

# Monday: Bacteria for Ultrasound Imaging #

[[1]](http://m.caltech.edu/news/scientists-design-bacteria-reflect-sonar-signals-ultrasound-imaging-80803)The use of bacteria in medicine is not novel which is why the scientists turned to it for a design to reflect sonar signals for ultrasound imaging. Recently, bacteria was used to target cancer and tumor cells with the help of a magnetic field and this current study to me is like a continuation to that. Why do I think so? Ultrasound machines are used to hit the designed bacteria with sound waves in order to produce images of the current location of the bacteria and then you can know if the bacteria got to the targeted area because there's a possibility of the bacteria being attacked by the body's immune system - the reason bacteria was replaced by sperm for the treatment of cervical cancer. This ultrasound machines concept is the same used by the submarine or ships when another ship or submarine is trying to locate it.

The old or normal imaging technique are usually light based — they rely on light to take pictures of cells and can't even take the picture except the tissue sample is outside the body — this restriction is due to the fact that light can't pass through the deeper tissues of the body where the bacteria would definitely reside and so it's pointless. For this reason, the lead researcher, [Mikhail Shapiro](https://www.cce.caltech.edu/content/mikhail-g-shapiro), considered using soundwaves as they can travel deeper through human tissues.

According to Shapiro, this technology should be available to zoologists presently but as to humans, it may take longer before this technology comes to actualization.

# Tuesday: Engineers make wearable sensors for plants #

<center>![image](https://img.esteem.ws/jpa2o8efaf.jpg)[Iowa State University researchers have developed these "plant tattoo sensors" to take real-time, direct measurements of water use in crops](https://www.news.iastate.edu/news/2018/01/03/planttattoosensors)</center>

Patrick Schnable of the Iowa State University experimentally measured the time expended by two kinds of corn plants in moving water from roots to lower leaves, and from lower leaves to the upper leaves.

Of course, why would a scientist make a wearable sensor for plants? To know their water usage. It is believed that once something is measurable, then, there's more to explore about it. The measuring of water usage is expedient for the breeding of plants that are more efficient at water usage.

Patrick Schnable made use of a "tiny graphene sensor" which he taped to the plant just like the picture above and this is something new, it's been done for the first time.
<hr />
<blockquote>[2]Graphene is a wonder material. It’s a carbon honeycomb just an atom thick, it’s great for conducting electricity and heat, and it’s strong and stable.</blockquote>
<hr />

Although Liang Dong is the main author and developer of the sensor technology, Patrick did the testings. The technology was aimed at producing high quality and cheap rates. Dong added that the manufacture of the sensor shouldn't cost more than cents as the only thing needed is just the tape or graphene oxide in plant studies - this is because graphene oxide is very sensitive to water vapour, and water vapour usually changes its conductivity which is why it can accurately measure the movement of water.

<hr />

<hr />

That's not all about the sensors, there's more to what they can do.

# Wednesday: Fish linked to higher IQ and better sleep #

[[3]](https://healthyforgood.heart.org/eat-smart/articles/fish-and-omega-3-fatty-acids) Fishes contain Omega-3 fats or let's put it this way, Omega-3 fats are fatty acids found in many types of fishes. A recent study found it to be connected to an improved intelligence as well as a good sleep in man. This study later revealed sleep as "the potential missing link between fish and intelligence.

A group of 541 children ranging from 9 - 11 years old, consisting of 54 percent boys and 46 percent girls in China were given a questionnaire to know their frequency of fish consumption and duration of sleep in the last one month. Most of their answers were never, once in two weeks and at least once-a-week.

After the analysis of the points they gathered, they found out the children eating fish weekly have about 4.8 points higher than the seldom fish eaters in the IQ exams and those that eat fishes less than once-a-week had about 3.3 points higher than the non-fish eaters. [[4]](https://www.deccanchronicle.com/lifestyle/health-and-wellbeing/221217/weekly-fish-consumption-linked-to-better-sleep-higher-iq-says-study.html)This was linked to reduced or lesser disturbances even during sleep, which is a characteristic of a good or quality sleep.

In better words, Omega-3 fats have been found to reduce antisocial behavior, poor cognition is linked to antisocial behavior and antisocial behavior is linked to lack of sleep which means Omega-3 indirectly reduces antisocial behaviors by directly reducing disturbances and easing sleep.

Sorry, I had to break this here, I spent too much time trying to edit it and make it look nice but the Part 2 comes up tomorrow, anyway.

One more thing... I think I should expansiate what I learnt on Thursday and Friday this week.

Fish has slways been a good source of omega 3 fatty acid. Although lots of people prefer beef more than fish. Even at a time the aged are adviced to cut down on beef.

Fish is also good for proper development and growth of the children too. This was a wonderful read.
