HP Product Evaluation.

HP marketing was harvesting groupthink with a product design survey. I recalled all the idiots in the "I helped design it" Windows ads, and thought I should counter that trend with some professional product evaluation (which I used to bill for).

This is what I wrote:

The performance of this machine is as good as expected, which is PHENOMENAL. The configuration is highly evolved, I am using every port - six USB video cameras and six displays, SDXC, and the headphone jack (please keep it!). Even the speakers are listenable, and I am perhaps the most fanatical audiophobe/phile in your database.

It is not a 10/10 because of less sexy issues, starting with serviceability. I kept my 2010 HP Elite 6930P going until this upgrade by taking it apart and vacuuming the dust accumulation, replaced the battery twice and the keyboard, upgraded DRAM. This Omen is as impenetrable as Apple phones, which I refuse to use because of the planned obsolescence and programmed failure.

The keyboard is a dust trap and impossible to vacuum out. I also suggest that wider gaps between the alpha keys, level shift keys, and numeric keypad would reduce the spurious Caps Lock and Num Lock presses. Think haptics!

It takes two hands to open this model - I wish the friction force was less than the weight of the clamshell bottom. The case also has sharp edges which are uncomfortable carrying and operating, also stress points which will transmit shock on impact, break, and potentially rip my laptop backpack.

I really miss a feature of my old HP which I first thought was a gimmick: the keyboard light on top of the screen. The backlit keys are cool, but the overhead light was more functional.

Also, the built in camera sucks. Granted, I am not photogenic, but even my cheapest webcam (Logi C920) is better. With ring lights proliferating, I would suggest framing the LCD in dimmable LEDs for future Vlogging and Gaming models. The top bar may be too much, but the bezel sides could work. You could even include side firing LED downlights to illuminate the work surface.

Finally, the free trial software is annoying, especially offers for software RENTAL, a disturbing greed driven trend. My cost of ownership is controlled by freeware, extending service life, and avoiding consumables like ink and toner.
