Love and Monsters - Evolution fantasy?

In the movie "love and monsters" humans are knocked back down to the bottom of the food chain by mutant monsters.

It's not meant to be scientifically rigorous, but it's worth mentioning that every single living organism has already tried to eat the entire biosphere for 3.5 billion years, as evolution just keeps coming up with ever more deadly and efficient replicators.

The most deadly species that evolution has managed to come up with is us.  Homo sapiens expanded to nearly the entire planet and dominated the food chain everywhere we showed up -- and we managed to do all this with primitive tools. 
 
In the last hundred years, we not only topped the food chain, but we extinctified any species that got in our way and transformed huge chucks of the planet's biosphere to make it tastier.  

Anything that tops us better be smarter.  Nature already tried sharp claws and fangs, and all it got was the near extinction of all megafauna.
