I do believe it is useful. The person curating it is looking for people to feature in his posts who are not only posting quality content but also are interacting and supporting others. There is a voting process. The winner gets to borrow 200 steem for a week to put to good use. But more importantly, he created a discord channel to further the getting to know and supporting each other. It includes a mentoring channel and they just started a new challenge/contest where 2 people are cooperating on a post - different media interpretation of each other's work or whatever the team decides to do. I feel it is very encouraging. also, people who have been in a project are asked to recommend other newbies for future Map editions or whatever you want to call them. That encourages exploration and new people who post good stuff to be found a bit faster.
