I came across this little fellow walking slowly and aimlessly on my windowsill and knew that he had run out of "petrol"  When our vehicles run dry they stop. No problem!
When a bee runs out, it dies! 
OR
Like our cars it can often simply be filled up . . .

Bees fly huge distances in search of flowers which they pollinate. The pollen they collect is used by them to make honey and the bees use it as their fuel

The pollen collects on tiny hairs on their legs which they rub off in the hive. Before leaving however, they fill up on fuel - Honey!

Bee scouts go out daily in search of flowers. On their return to the hive they do an intricate dance which indicates to their fellow worker bees the distance and location of the flowers 
And we humans thought we had invented the GPS system!

Occasionally something happens that delays a bee, maybe it got blown off course, maybe it spent too long flitting from flower to flower. Whatever the reason this one got stuck far from home

I fetched my camera and a little honey, and dotted it around him. Within a few seconds he caught the scent and frantically stumbled around trying to find it. He must have taken all of three quarters of an hour to refuel, rest and head for home, leaving me with a feeling of deep satisfaction and some pictures of this hard working little insect!

My son Craig @craigcryptoking shares my love of bees and has featured them on many of his  great blogs, but neither of us has a photograph of a bee with his legs covered in pollen !
