Howdy Jonboy! Yes, it is strange that he left his rifle behind. It could give him some protection. If he encountered an enemy, the enemy, seeing the rifle would think twice before making a move. They wouldn't know it had no bullets. That would buy Hermann some time. Anyway, since he lived to tell the tale, maybe he did the right thing. :-)

I thought that was very strange but maybe he didn't want to fool with carrying an empty rifle around, I don't know but you make a good point, most of the times guns stop violence just by their presence because people don't want to get shot.
