Conscious Courage is the ability to assess situations and circumstances, both positively and negatively, and decide to take an action that will serve its purpose. This type of courage is called "conscious," because it has something "conscious" about it something you'd notice if you were to look at someone who has a lot of courage: they just seem to have it all together. It seems effortless. And while this is one of the highest forms of courage, anyone can come upon it whenever they need to even if it's their first time stepping out into the public eye.

This isn't to say, however, that everything we've ever done in life has been a triumph. Many things in life are successes that are only temporary. They provide little lasting satisfaction. However, these same things that bring little lasting satisfaction can also be the most ephemeral of experiences. And there is nothing wrong with this; after all, the more ephemeral a moment is, the more ephemeral its value.
But what if the ephemeral nature of most of our encounters with life was changed? What if we took the steps needed to lessen the negative consequences of our actions and maximize the positive effects? After all, isn't that the very purpose to confront our most challenging challenges in life? Isn't that the very reason why life is beautiful, even though the path we walk through it is sometimes difficult?
The real key to being courageous is taking small steps. For instance, rather than deciding to "lose weight," try "just getting started." Or rather, start "just getting started."
The most valuable lesson to be learned from this example is that we need to be intentional about our actions, even if they're as seemingly insignificant as choosing to get up early rather than staying asleep. Achieving a certain goal requires some level of conscious effort on our part. Thus, in addition to having an end goal, there must also be a beginning point. Once that initial starting point is reached, then a series of small victories will take care of the rest.

Making a conscious decision to pursue our goals is the most significant step, but even that's not enough.
Conscious courage is the way of going forward with what we know to be right. It's the ability to turn something we don't want into something that benefits us. In life, a choice often comes down to a matter of weighing the costs of doing right vs. doing wrong. While it's easy to make snap decisions when life presents them, taking the time to weigh the pros and cons of doing something goes a long way toward ensuring that we make the right choices. Conscious courage is one of the most important elements for getting where we want to go.
