Blocking that inflammation may interfere with this process, leading to harder-to-treat pain. "What we've been doing for decades not only appears to be wrong, but appears to be 180 degrees wrong," says senior study author Jeffrey Mogil, PhD, a professor in the department of psychology at McGill. "You should not be blocking inflammation. You should be letting inflammation happen. That's what stops chronic pain."

----
The scientists studied patients who suffered from lower back pain. For patients whose pain went away, the team observed changes in the genes, especially in blood cells, known as "neutrophils". They followed this up with experiments on mice, where they blocked the neutrophils and observed that the pain lasted for two to ten times longer. Although anti-inflammatory drugs relieved pain in the short term, the team reports that these drugs had the same effect of prolonging the pain in the longer term. Senior study author, Jeffrey Mogil, suggests that it may be better to replace use of anti-inflammatory pain relievers with analgesics, like acetaminophen, that can relieve pain without reducing inflammation.

Read the rest from Medscape: How We Treat Acute Pain Could Be Wrong

---

50% of this post's author rewards are being directed to @penny4thoughts for distribution to authors of relevant and engaging comments. Glad I've at least been alternating Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen for my recent lower back pain then!

The relationship between steriods and chronic pain got me thinking about body builders on steriods. Such individuals usually sort-of experience grave muscle breakdown such that it becomes hard for to recognize them, especially when they age. Also, the slightest injury they experience can take longer time for full recovery.

The thing is : we need to work , it is impossible to sit in front of the computer enduring pain as strong as this , according to what I understand , let the body recover , the bad thing is the deadline , but it seems to me very correct

Right, and the author doesn't actually suggest avoiding pain killers. If I understood correctly, his claim is just that pain-killers are better if they're not also anti-inflammatories.

Exactly , I read your post , well I always read , analgesics would help with pain while the body does its job , my question is ¿if due to a certain circumstance the person suffering from inflammation has other complications ? the body would have more work and it would take more time, I think it is better to help the body not to do all the work , in inflammation, but to help it, that way it takes less time and the patient suffers less
