Raising Tadpoles (Day 41) - A Word About Jugs

# Day 41

Performed another 50% water change today as the ammonia reached 1 ppm, I'll determine whether to continue with the usual 30% changes or perform another 50% change tomorrow dependent upon the test results. If the result shows .5 ppm or lower, I'll continue with the regular 30% change and follow up with a 50% change the day after to give myself a bit of breathing room. In the meantime, I've added an extra dose of Seachem Prime to bind any excess ammonia as a precautionary measure for today.

I'm still in the process of collecting more water jugs to compensate for the extra water needed when I perform the weekly 30% water change on the main, 30 gallon (114 L), tank. I've been using the 5 gallon as a spare water container for changes. This is a bit unwieldy as there are no handles on it and it tends to dig into your fingers if your hands slide up the sides to the only nature holding point, the hooked rim.

Depending on how many develop into froglets in the first few days of the final stages of their metamorphosis, I'll either have to use the 5 gallon to temporarily keep them in or, if only a few are developmentally advanced, I may be able to get away with the 3 gallon (unlikely). At that point, I can repurpose the 5 gallon bucket I use for water changes and filter cleanings into another water container. I can also repurpose a drawer out of the large plastic storage drawers I have as a make shift water container, may even be easier to carry compared to the 5 gallon tank.

One thing anyone who needs accurate water changes should be cognizant of is that it's best to mark the water lines for your tank rather than relying on accuracy in your water containers. I personally mark off the levels for the fill line, 10%, 30%, and 50% changes. If you don't want to take the time to accurately measure your tank (I've pointed out previously that aquariums are measured using the outer dimensions and as such have much smaller capacities than advertised) then be careful of which containers you use, some plastic may balloon out, result in you putting more water in than you planned. The best plastic containers are made of hard plastic that wont see the sides bow outward. I use cleaned containers of Arizona fruit punch due to their hard plastic as opposed to the soft plastic of milk gallons or store bought water jugs.
