Bottles and Croissants - an original poem

> About an hour before kick-off, in a stadium with no segregation, mass fighting erupted. There are differing accounts as to what triggered it – many United fans said __locals bombarded them with bottles and croissants__, a version endorsed by Sexton who said: “It seemed to me that there was a lot of provocation going on,” while the club’s secretary, Les Olive, was quoted in the Guardian saying, “the trouble seemed to start when St-Étienne fans started shoving our people away from the central section behind the goal”.

Forty years have passed but memory
Is strong, how _les perfides Français_
Attacked our boys with bottles and croissants.

No, really. What could the lads do but fight,
Their ears ringing with haughty Gallic taunts,
Their honour speckled with pastry crumbs?

It's in _The Guardian_, bastille of truth,
Liberal reporting, from Manchester
Itself, although it could be a careless rumour.

Perhaps Benny Hill got his inspiration -
The poor milkman (the English) defeated
By French bakery - from this story.

Satire is dead and there is little more
To be said. It is true that the bottles
Must have hurt. But the croissants ...
An insult unbearable in the mind.

Hooliganism is a really sad and sometimes deadly problem. I watched life on television when in 1985 in the Heisel stadium in Brussels, Belgium, at a match between Liverpool and Juventus Roma 39 people were killed. It was horrific

My poem was not meant to be a detailed essay on a complicated and difficult subject. Of course you remember Hillsborough: the narrative has reluctantly shifted from the tragedy being the result of _hooliganism_, to now it being accepted that the deaths were solely the result of _policing errors_.

Young men fight, but I wish the TV would strive  to give us as much moral outrage at the old men, with their wars and their banks.

I hope this reply reads in a gentle way: I've waited a day, to try and find some kind of a balance. In love and peace.

I'm sorry I offended you. I guess, I didn't express myself well enough. And maybe I even totally misunderstood your poem I thought it was meant to be critic on hooliganism and an over the top nationalism.
And I didn't mean to criticize your poem at all, just wanted to tell you, that it reminded me of these events I remember so well.
Of course I agree that wars are far worse than any kind of hooliganism can ever be. In the last few years most of what I have been concerned about outside my own little world are the wars of our time and those who instigate wars in overt or covert ways.
At the moment I try to broaden my perspective here on steemit, by reading and posting more non-political stuff, that reminds myself that no matter bad things are at the moment the world is probably not going to end tomorrow and there is a lot of good to be found right now.
