Another Walk Through Nanchan, Wuxi

<p>Nanchan is a part of Wuxi that is near the city center, but it has a hub and vibe of it's own. There are a lot of foreign and domestic eateries and bars, here. But, the dynamic of the canal is interesting in and of itself. One pedestrian street on one side of the artificial waterway is filled with places like Starbucks, live music bars, and more modern stuff. On the other side, it's more traditional, and depending on how far you venture off the beaten track, a little downtrodden. Here are some pics of a recent stroll on the more "Chinese" pedestrian street.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On this side, you can find more traditional arts and crafts. This woman is making ink paintings with her thumb. I am thinking of returning someday and buying a few (they were like 30 RMB) each, because they would likely make good family gifts for when I go back to New Jersey next summer. There were also handcrafted instruments being sold nearby.</p>

<p>This is typical Chinese weirdness. As far as I could ascertain, there were not actual real, breathy, hairy orangutans in here beating their chests.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It really is easy to find semi-demolished areas around this area. Some of this part of Wuxi is actually made up of working class homes. Some of those homes are falling in on themselves, and some of those ruins end up getting remodeled as tourist attractions. Turns out, gentrification can be as Chinese as it is American.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Weird, childish looking dimsum. Didn't try it. Was saving room in my stomach for a lamb wrap at the nearby Aussie bar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And then there is the temple area at night. Out of all of the Jiangsu cities not named "Changzhou," I seem to come to Wuxi an awful lot. Only, I have never been here at night. Walking through Nanchan after sunset makes me really want to change that, and soon.&nbsp;</p>

Actually, I live in Changzhou. However, I go to Wuxi a lot. So, next time, definitely Red Lion! I do a blog called www.realchangzhou.org
