The Egg of Victory: Plus, a Belated Music Monday Tune (Chook Related)

Chickens have to be the dumbest animals ever. You make them super dooper nesting boxes and what do they do? Just plop eggs randomly in the straw. Or under the zucchini plant so you find them two weeks after laying. And then there's the old running away from you like you might just take an ax to them EVEN THOUGH you do nice things for them like bringing them a mix of garlic, ACV, seeds and oats and crushed eggshells for their damn health. And then - you ask them to pose for a photo, and they do it sideways! Like, what the?

The thing is, chickens aren't dumb. They apparently can even count, have self control and even empathy. Studies say so. Like, if you put more treats in one box and less in the other, they'll go for more every time. Hmm. So perhaps they were only laying eggs randomly in the straw so we could move the nesting boxes down for them, because although it was okay to roost upstairs, they'd rather not go to that effort when there's an egg to be squeezed out, thanks very much.

Poor man o'mine. Like he didn't have enough to do already. It's a testament to his love for me that he got out his tools and set to work lowering the coop.

And this morning... lol and behold! There was an egg in the nesting box. Seems like it was what those clever chookies wanted all along.

Ha, glad you liked it!!! Love this song. Updated post with actual picture of boxes, coz I forgot. One 'clever' chicken made a racket last night as she forgot where the gate was that'd get her out of the vegie patch and back into where she needed to go. Funny things.

The secret to nestboxes being used is to have them the right height (not over 17" high), the right size, and in a place that is not near high traffic. They much prefer to not be able to see out or have anyone see in. Also, there have to be enough boxes, 1 for every 3 birds. That's so they can pick the single one, and they ALL want to use it.  :))

Almost all of ours have used the nestboxes. This year there's 1 who will NOT read the memo. But the other 17 did....

ah yes we googled the right dimensions, so it was the height they didn't like. They seem to like it on the ground though. I only have 4 chooks, will get another 4, so they'll have to deal with 3 boxes until hubby has recovered enough to make more. I might have to make do with some @nateonsteemit style chook buckets.

If you have a rooster, and plan to hatch eggs, having the broody nest in contact with the ground like @nateonsteemit, directly, is the most healthy way for a hen to hatch eggs. Around here, if the nestbox was on the ground, it would rot away in a year....or float away, if it was a year like last year...

Also, being on the ground, I'd wonder what besides a hen I'd find inside...

I created this system of gates and holding pens (aka vegie patches) this year, and it's soo much easier to herd them in.... I feel like I've kinda won, though they still manage to do stupid things like get stuck in places they aren't meant to be.
