ULOG #14: BLRC Johnny Onion Ride

The Buffalo Lazy Randonneur Club (BLRC) hosts four rides a year, each to mark the solstice or equinox. Each ride happens on the first Sunday of a new season. I made previous steemit blog posts for the <a href="https://steemit.com/cycling/@robmolecule/9th-annual-blrc-tweed-ride">Tweed</a> (spring equinox) and <a href="https://steemit.com/cycling4steemit/@robmolecule/blrc-seersucker-ride">Seersucker</a> (summer solstice) rides. While those rides happen in many cities, the fall equinox Johnny Onion ride is all ours. What are we celebrating? It's a tribute to the Breton Onion Johnnies from Northern France who would sell their onions by bicycle in England, most popular in the early 20th Century. So we dress up in this outdated I guess very American idea of how the French would dress. Basically it's lots of stripes, berets and scarves. We all bring onions and ride our bikes to Delaware Park to make a big pot of French onion soup. 

I have lots of photos. I don't know how to choose. We always meet at the Naval Park in downtown Buffalo. We used to meet at Canalside but the security kicked us out for drinking a couple years ago, forcing us to move our starting point.

I took most of these with the obvious exception of any that include me in the photo. I'm in the one below, which was taken for me by N.H.

Our first stop is the bicycle/pedestrian bridge that passes over the I-190 overlooking the Peace Bridge. It was only built a couple years ago and happened to be just a couple hundred feet from our previous traditional rest stop. So we made an exception and changed the tradition to now rest at this perfect spot.

From here our route takes us over Unity Island, a popular fishing spot with a bike path running along the western side of the island. There two access points to the island, both crossing the Black Rock Canal. Near the southern end is a drawbridge, which was down and open to traffic when we arrived. However, when we attempted to leave the island at the north end, the swing bridge was turned and closed for a passing boat. It was already turning back but it's a very slow process. So we ended up with an unplanned second rest stop. Well, we all stayed on our bikes for the most part and didn't turn it into a drinking stop at least.

The Scajaquada bike path leads directly from the bridge to Delaware Park, our final destination. We have a picnic next to rose garden where we will make an amazing French onion soup with all the onions we brought.

Oh this was a beautiful day for one of my favorite cycling events. It's a perfect end to summer. Well that makes me want to cry a bit knowing that summer is over. We all had a blast! I saw new faces as well as friends who were doing their first BLRC ride. It's usually an older crowd and many of the people I ride with don't go to these. They're missing out! I hope to see more people next year. Well there is one more coming up this year, the Winter Solstice ride AKA the Wassail Ride. There is no clothing theme other than to dress for the winter weather and drink some <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wassail">wassail</a>.  I'll leave you with this photo of three of my best friends.

Yeah, people really like to bring out the old bike for these rides. It's all part of the fun. Rides like this are great because anyone can organize a ride. Just get a couple people to collaborate with.
