America's spy agencies are permitted to gather information on citizens without a warrant in certain situations: U.S. Court of Appeal has ruled this can happen if a non-national, who's legitimately being monitored abroad, makes contact with an American.

The case was brought by an American citizen arrested in 2011, pleaded guilty to attempting to give material support to a terrorist organisation. However he questioned whether it was legal for the NSA to collect information on him without a warrant.
