<p>A friend of mine posted a message in our private chat the other day. He inferred "Please be careful talking about your crypto holdings." It was due to the recent <a href="https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20180625/p2a/00m/0na/002000c">stabbing of a "Dark Web" cyber security analyst.</a> I joked back at him not to worry as I could act as security for them. Then I started to think about his warning a bit more.&nbsp;</p>
<p>We've heard about a lot of crypto hackings as well as straight up <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/russian-crypto-blogger-found-dead-in-petersburg-apartment">muggings</a>. How much crypto do you need to own in order to motivate someone to take it form you? Many people on Steemit are worth quite a bit of money, although thieves would have a harder time trying to steal it due to the power down feature, if you are known to have a fairly large wallet here, I would venture a guess you have a lot of crypto holdings elsewhere too and could be a target.</p>
<p>Many of us don't have good <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=12&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjfyNSPqfDbAhUJnq0KHRPqBXIQFghdMAs&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FOperations_security&amp;usg=AOvVaw0Cjom8LUhF-TPh57ixT9R6">OPSEC</a> because we haven't been in the space that long or you are like me and don't feel the need to be anonymous anymore as older adults. I'm starting to realize that latter way of thinking opens yourself up as a target though, even before this bear market turns around.</p>
<p>Don't get me wrong, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, 9-11 story was BS, but I am starting to realize that you don't have to be paranoid to want to protect what you have worked so hard to earn in this life. You simply should up your game, just as you do when you walk down an alley alone, don't be blindsided, both online and in the real world.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I would urge people to not brag about their crypto holdings, not even to close friends. It's human nature for us to want to tell people about an amazing trade we made, or a return on investment, recent retirement due to crypto wealth, etc. All SNS information is being stored and unfortunately vacuumed up by nefarious people. If you use Crypto Twitter, or any other crypto related platforms be anon.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you want to fix your OPSEC I would start with reading about it on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operations_security">Wiki</a>. Tomorrow or Wednesday I will post a follow up to this on some of the steps I am taking to protect myself. From there it's up to you, but stay safe, remember people will do anything to take what you have earned.</p>

Especially true since this whole space is  so alien to us behavior wise. Much easier to make mistakes we never thought of, no reason to add risk!
