Evolution Meets Manipulation; As Gene-Editing Enters Embyonic Level

<p>The evolution of our human existence has finally taken a new turn. We're now in the era where we can determine and dictate the trend of human evolution. Welcome to the era where DNA can be altered at the embryonic level.</p>

<p>DNA, as we know, is the life's source code; and it is a makeup of one's biological identity.</p>
<blockquote>Before now, we do not choose the outcome of our biological identity; they choose us.</blockquote>
<p>But all that has changed with advanced genetic engineering. Now we can edit embryos to get the desired trait we want, while suppressing or entirely removing undesired trait.</p>
<p>This era was heralded by a team of researchers at the Portland, Oregon Health and Science University; where the first human embryo was successfully modified. This team was led by Dr Shoukhrat Mitalipov.</p>

<p>This, no doubt, has broadened the field of genetic engineering, as it has been proven that it is possible to correct defective genes [farewell to inherited genetic disorders].</p>
<p>From the reviews of Dr Shoukhrat's work, it was stated that the procedure was initiated at fertilization. At this point, gene-editing chemicals were injected into the newly fertilized ovum. By the time it is developing into embryo, the editing had already begun taking effect.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the time of Dr Shoukhrat's report, the success of the procedure was majorly based on systematic reviews of randomized trials, but advances are really being made to make the procedure more successful. Also, with the advanced gene-editing tool like CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindrdomic Repeat), there is really a ray of hope in advancing this technology.</p>

<h2>Potential applications of Embryonic editing</h2>
<p>The applications are almost limitless, but I'll just outline a few of them:</p>
<ul>
  <li>This will be helpful in deleting or suppressing genetic diseases</li>
  <li>This would also help in improving biological functions of humans</li>
  <li>We can create the kind of desired trait and genetic features we want. That is advanced genetic enhancement</li>
</ul>
<p>As a way of conclusion, I'd love to state that these changed effected at the embryonic level will be inherited by the proceeding generations. Isn't that amazing? Now, evolution has finally merged with germline engineering.</p>
