If the only thing you know is what was taught you in school to get certificate, than you are not much relevant in this competition-filled world. More often than not, your breakthrough may not lie in what you studied but the skills you have and willing to put into work. As a matter of fact, many big corporations now look beyond just certificates when holding their recruitment process. I'm not saying earning a certificate is not good, but also try to get additional skill to give you an edge.

Skills are what you are to fall back on when your certifications fail. Believe me, you may be taught about aqua-dynamics with all the principles of upthrust and flotation but it will not overrule the fact that you need to practice how to swim if you want to go into swimming competition, otherwise you'll be at the mercies of the lifeguards to save your life.

Some of the skills you acquired today may just come as a hubby or a means to pass out time but it may be that particular skill that will be your strong foundation to succeed tomorrow. Remember the brothers that invented airplane? Orville and Wilbur Wright. They were skilled in bicycle repairs. Which means, their minds were already very mechanically inclined. It is not surprising they were able to create the airplane.

Some of the football stars we are celebrating today are college graduates. The likes of Vincent Kompany (with a masters degree),  Juan Mata (with two degrees) etc. Who, If they had only focused on balancing X and Y, would not have made the level of impact the are making. As you are training your brain for the theory aspects, also train your hands for the practically aspects.

No matter how you look at it, theory can never and will never replace the place of skills (the practical aspect). The days where only your certificates give you the edge is fast coming to an end. What the world is looking out for are people who can add relevant value with their skills. The truth is, if you have to be paid, then you need to bring something to the table. This is why you need to constantly work to build up yourself. Cos a day may come when your only salvation will be what you can do, not what you know.
