DARPA is financing the development of an unhackable Morpheus system

Hack-a-thons and similar events do a great deal to engage the public, but it is not really enough for institutions like the Pentagon. They have to protect really valuable information so they would really appreciate a secure solution. That’s why the American developers at DARPA started a 50 million program that is intended to enhance cybersecurity as much as possible. Scientists from the University of Michigan that are developing the security system called Morpheus. This system should become a part of hardware keys and make them almost unhackable.

These experts tried to identify seven different kinds of hardware weaknesses that open the door for hackers. For example, problematic user rights systems, buffer bugs or numerical errors. DARPA is trying to fully fix all of these issues within five years. This alone should reduce the number of potential attacks by half. And that’s exactly why the System Security Integrated Through Hardware and Firmware (SSITH) is creating the Morpheus system.

Morpheus is an incredible system. Its creators employed an interesting mechanic to make it virtually unhackable. They designed hardware that regularly randomly switches the data locations throughout the computer. The project lead, Todd Austin, says that in common systems the data location stays pretty much the same. Once the hacker gets into the system, he can find the data and it’s over. But Morpheus is quite different. It’s like if you tried to solve the Rubik’s Cube and every time you look at it randomly shuffles.
